Schnoerr Named A-10 Rowing Student-Athlete Of The Year

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass rowing senior co-captain Samantha Schnoerr has been named the Atlantic 10 Rowing Student-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference on Monday. Junior Emily Boucher was also named to the conference academic all-conference team. This is the second Atlantic 10 award for Schnoerr, who was named to the All-Conference First Team at the league championships two weeks ago.

Schnoerr, coxswain for the Varsity Eight, helped the Minutewomen to a third place finish at the A-10 Championships, finishing with a time of 8:07.95. The Norwalk, Conn. native has been named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who finish a semester with a grade point average above 3.50, for the past three semesters. She finishes her career at UMass with a cumulative GPA of 3.945 as a Legal Studies major, and will be attending Michigan State College of Law next fall.

Schnoerr was also recognized by the Legal Studies department when she was one of two recipients for the Shep Shepard Award, which awards a combination of academic excellence and contributions to the community. To read more about the Shep Shepard Award, click here.

Boucher (Lee, N.H.) earns her first academic all-conference selection following the Second Varsity Eight's second place finish at the A-10 Championships (8:38.37). The Anthropology major has been named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of the past three semesters, and was part of the USRowing Under-23 National Team last summer where she competed in the Lightweight Single Sculls.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Rowing Academic All-Conference team was announced on Monday, May 2, recognizing 10 student-athletes for their performance in the classroom and during competition.

Massachusetts' Samantha Schnoerr headlined this year's team as she was named the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the league's Sports Information Directors. The senior coxswain led the Minutewomen Varsity 8 squad to a third place finish at the A-10 Rowing Championships back on April 16. She was named to the 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team while serving as team co-captain. A native of Norwalk, Conn., Schnoerr is a three-time member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and will graduate from UMass with a degree in Legal Studies. Schnoerr will attend Michigan State College of Law next year.

Dayton led all schools with three student-athletes named to the 2011 academic team, while Massachusetts and Rhode Island each placed two members. Duquesne, George Washington and Saint Joseph's all had one student-athlete on this year's squad.

Joining Schnoerr on this year's academic team are Dayton's Michelle Baeder, Katherine Bruening and Erin Quinn; Duquesne's Taylor Shannon; Anna Kaminski of George Washington; UMass' Emily Boucher; Rhode Island's Megan O'Brien and Jenessa Redfern; and Saint Joseph's Danielle Brady.

Brady, Bruening and Redfern are all repeat honorees from a season ago, while Redfern becomes just the 10th student-athlete in league history to be named to the academic team three times.
