AMHERST, Mass. - Women's track and field distance runner Karen Roa and the Lightweight Four boat for women's rowing have been named UMass Co-Athletes of the Week. Karen Roa and the Lightweight four, consisting of Liz Euiler, Kim Patrick, Emily Boucher, Megan Donovan and the Coxswain Carly Payne will be honored at Wednesday's UMass Sport Luncheon.
At last weekend's New England Championship Meet, Roa (Jamaica, N.Y.) finished first in the 3000 meter steeplechase, making her a New England Champion. Her mark of 10:31.28 also bested her own UMass all-time record by 2.88 seconds. This is the second time this season that Roa set the UMass all-time mark in the event. This mark also ranks her 31 in the NCAA East rankings, which makes her a likely candidate to participate in the NCAA Regionals.
In its final race of the season, the UMass Lightweight Four finished in first place and won the Robert Espeseth Trophy at the 2011 Dad Vail Regatta this weekend. The Minutewomen finished the final race with a time of 7:40.08.
Also of the rowing team, Samantha Schnoerr (Norwalk, Conn.) was named the Atlantic 10 Rowing Student-Athlete of the year as well as the UMass Female Scholar Athlete at the Senior Award's Banquet. The 2011 A-10 All-Conference First Team member holds a 3.945 grade point average as a Legal Studies major, and was the recipient of the Shep Shepard Award, which recognizes academic excellence in Legal Studies as well as contributions to the community.
Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) of the men's track and field team was recently named the UMass Male Athlete of the Year at the Senior Awards Banquet. The Stow, Mass. native was also honored as the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year earlier this season. Busch owns the indoor pole vault record (16-0.75) while standing in second place in the outdoor record book in the same event (15-9).
