AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass baseball team jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back, pounding out 17 hits in a 9-5 victory over Dayton in the squad's home opener at Earl Lorden Field on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Minutemen improve to 3-1 in the Atlantic 10, their best start to conference play since 2001, and are now 9-12 overall. The Flyers fall to 14-16 overall and 2-2 in the conference following the loss.

With one away in the bottom of the first, senior Eric Fredette drew a walk, followed by two straight singles by classmates Matt Gedman and Peter Copa that produced the first run of the contest. Multner then gave the Minutemen a 2-0 advantage with a two-out single through the let side that scored Gedman.

After freshman Dylan Begin doubled to the gap in right center to lead off the bottom of the second, UMass used three consecutive bunts to kick start its most productive inning of the afternoon. Serino picked up the first RBI of the frame with an infield single. Then sophomore Rich Graef moved freshman Nick Sanford and Serino into scoring position for Fredette who dropped a single into left center to plate the pair.

The Minutemen scored another two runs in its next turn at bat as Multner and Begin started off the inning with singles and Serino came up with a big two-run base knock up the middle that pushed the advantage to 7-0.

Dayton took two of the runs back in the fourth to cut its deficit to 7-2 after capitalizing on a leadoff single by Danny Welch and a one-out walk to Mel Skochdopole. However, UMass responded by scoring for a fourth straight inning. In the bottom half of the frame, Gedman singled to left and scored on an RBI double by Multner.

C.J. Gillman doubled and crossed the plate on a ground ball in the Flyes' half of the fifth before Copa provided the final run of the afternoon for UMass, hitting his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth.

Gillman homered in the seventh and picked up a fielder's choice RBI in the eighth to cap off the scoring.

Junior Glen Misho improved to 4-1 on season as he threw six innings for the Minutemen and allowed four runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Dayton ace Cameron Hobson was touched up for nine runs, eight earned, on 16 hits in 5.1 innings of work with two walks and four strikeouts.

Copa finished a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon with two RBI and a run scored for UMass, while Multner went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Serino batted 2-for-4 with three RBI and scored once and Fredette (2-for-3), Gedman (2-for-5) and Begin (2-for-3) all registered multi-hit performances, as well.

For the Flyers, Gillman was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jimmy Roesinger hit 2-for-4 and Glover went 2-for-3.

The teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon on Earl Lorden Field with game two of the series slated to begin at 1 p.m.
