AMHERST, Mass. - After a decisive win vs. Sacred Heart, 6-1, on senior day, the UMass tennis team (12-8) looks to head into the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament seeded seventh to go up against the Rams of Fordham (3-12) on Friday, Mar. 8 at the Boar's Head Inn in Charlottesville, Va. at 8 am. The last time these two teams faced off was on Oct. 11 at the Mullins Courts in Amherst, Mass. where UMass defeated Fordham, 5-2. But, the difference between UMass then and now, is a fresh looking tennis team, with players in different positions and new doubles partners. With this transformed UMass team, it looks to ride the four-game winning streak into the tournament with eyes on the A-10 crown.
Tournament Time
When it comes to the Atlantic 10 tournament, UMass has normally ended up at worst seventh place at season end and, at best, win the A-10 crown, which was back in 2001. In the last four years that UMass has played indoor, they have finished third, fourth (twice), and sixth respectively. With a well-balanced team, UMass looks for a successful ending to their season, if not, grow from its tournament experience with such a young team and look to next year.
Winning from the Bottom-Up

Coach Dixon believes that to find success in her squad, the bottom players are the key to winning the match. With a winning record of 12-8 to date, a big reason for that is the No. 4, No. 5, and No.6 singles players. At the No.4 singles, Jessica Podlofsky has found a comfort zone in this spot, as she is 7-2 being recently place in this position. With Podlofsky moving up to No. 4, Chantal Swiszcz has found her success in both No. 5 and No. 6 spots but has been recently playing No. 5, compiling a 5-1 record in this position. Finally, Kaitlyn Carpenter being placed in the rotation as the No. 6 singles, she has excelled also, racking up a 4-2 record in her respected position.
Boney Blasting Through UMass Records

Senior Candynce Boney has been playing well this season and finds herself climbing the ladder to be recognized as one of the top ten players in both singles and doubles in UMass. Currently, Boney stands tied for four all-time in singles wins and four all-time in doubles with the Atlantic 10 tournament remaining. If she were to wins in the tournament, she ends up as high as third all-time in singles and fourth all-time in doubles wins at UMass.
Scouting the Fordham Rams
Going into the Atlantic-10 Tournament, Fordham is 3-12 on the season and have lost its last six of seven matches. When facing UMass, the Rams are 1-12 all-time, with the last meeting coming on Oct. 11 at UMass, when the Minutewomen took the match, 5-2.
