BRONX, N.Y. - In a tightly-contested match up, the UMass baseball team was edged by Fordham, 6-5 in non-conference action at Houlihan Park on Saturday afternoon. The Rams (16-9) rallied for two runs after coming down to their last out in the ninth to leave the Minutemen at 7-11 on the season.
Fordham began the contest with a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. Ryan David singled to left and Chris Walker drove him in with a two-out double to the gap in left center.
The Minutemen promptly tied the score as senior Matt Gedman drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a single to center by senior Peter Copa, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Tom Conley.
Gedman later put UMass on top in the fourth with his second triple in as many games. After freshman Rob McLam walked and senior Eric Fredette reached on a fielder's choice, Gedman roped a pitch to right center and later came in on a sacrifice fly by Conley to push the score to 4-1.
The Rams eventually tied things up with two away in the bottom of the seventh. Tim Swatek started off the rally with a one-out double, Nick Martinez walked and Ryan Lee knocked in the pair of runners with a triple to right center and came home on a wild pitch to level the score at 4-4.
In their next turn at bat, the Minutemen pulled back in front after capitalizing on a Fordham error. Fredette reached on the miscue to extending the inning for Gedman who moved the runner to third with a single to right. Fredette then scored the go-ahead run on a ball to the backstop with Copa in the batter's box.
However, down to their last out, the Rams rallied for the victory. Martinez trickled a single up the middle with one down and scored on a two-out double by Lee. Chris Walker followed with a single to right to send in Lee for the winning run.
In relief of Glen Misho, junior Leif Sorenson took the loss (0-3) as he allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two in two innings on the hill. Jonathan Reich registered the win (2-0) for Fordham. He worked two innings and surrendered one unearned run on one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Pacing the UMass bats, Gedman finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Conley collected two RBI and freshman Nick Sanford had his second consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
David and Walker both batted 3-for-5 for the Rams, while Walker contributed two RBI as well. Lee (2-for-5) drove in three runs and scored twice.
