Field Hockey Adds Three For 2011

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass field hockey head coach Carla Tagliente has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. The 2011 Minutewomen freshmen class is comprised of defender Lauren Allymohamed of Seaford, England; goalkeeper Emma Hamstra of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and midfielder Renee Suter of Millersville, Pa.

The trio will join a program that has won three out of the last four Atlantic 10 Championships and graduates three seniors this year.

Allymohamed is a 5-7 back from Seaford, East Sussex, England and attends high school at Saint Bede's in Hailsham under Coach Steve Paxton.

"Lauren is an outstanding defender," Tagliente said. "She is a solid technical player excellent distribution skills from the back, as well as a very good penalty corner shot. Lauren is a very dynamic player. Her athleticism and natural attacking instincts will make her a very exciting player to watch for years to come."

Allymohamed plays her regional hockey at the Junior Regional Performance Centre, most recently competing with the Saxon Tigers U-18 squad at the Futures Cup. She has also played at the U-17 England High Performance Centre, and with the Saxon Tigers (U-16), competing at the Futures Cup and England Trialist.

Allymohamed was First Team South Regional 3B Division, finishing in third place this season. Her club is the current holder of the Sussex Cup, and is about to play in the finals again this season to defend its crown.

A multi-sport athlete, Allymohamed is also a Sussex and Prep School National Champion in the javelin, with a personal best of 40.71 meters. She is also a two-time Sussex Cup winner and National Qualifier in Netball.

Hamstra is a 5-6 goalkeeper from Ann Arbor, Mich. where she played three years on the varsity squad at Pioneer High School under Coach Jane Nixon. The Pioneers went 47-4-3 in her three-year varsity career, winning State Championships in 2008 and 2009, and finishing as the runner-up in Michigan in 2010.

"Emma joins us from the most storied field hockey program in the state of Michigan in Pioneer High School," Tagliente said. "She is an outstanding athlete with tremendous character. Emma has good basic fundamentals and a strong work ethic that will both lend themselves into her developing as an outstanding collegiate goalkeeper."

Hamstra was named Ann Arbor All-City in 2009 and 2010 when she amassed a combined record of 28-4-3 with an 83 percent save mark and 18 shutouts. She finished off her high school career with a 13-3-2 senior campaign in which she allowed just 11 total goals and posted eight shutouts, including two in postseason play when she stopped 88 percent of the shots she faced.

Hamstra also was the goalie for the varsity lacrosse team in 2009 and 2010. She was named All-City in 2010.

Renee Suter
Suter is a midfielder from Millersville, Pa., where she was a four-year member of the varsity squad at Penn Manor High School under Coach Matthew Soto. She led the Comets to four-straight Section 1 titles, to league titles, and the 2008 State Championship. Her team went a combined 99-10-2 in her career.

"Renee comes to us from one of the most well-respected high school programs in the country in Penn Manor," Tagliente said. "She has excellent fundamental skills, in particularly her ball-handling and ability to eliminate defenders. Renee will be a tremendous addition to the midfield with her vision and possession skills."

Suter was named League All-Star all four years, making first team in 2008-10. She took home First-Team All-State honors as a sophomore, junior, and senior as well, and was named Second-Team All-American in 2010 when she also served as team captain.

Suter capped off a fabulous high school career with a 29-goal, 36-assist senior campaign, giving her 82 goals and 80 assists for her four-year career.
