AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass baseball team battled back from a 5-1 deficit to pull with in a run of Dayton, but could not overtake the Flyers in a 6-4 loss at Earl Lorden Field on Sunday. Following the setback, the Minutemen are now 9-14 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton takes the series, 2-1, and improves to 16-16 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
UMass began the scoring with two down in the bottom of the first. Senior Matt Gedman lofted a 2-1 pitch over the fence in left for a solo home run, his third of the year.
However, Dayton countered with a pair of runs in the top of the second to pull in front. Mike Coughlin poked a two-out single through the right side and Bobby Glover reached on an error, setting up a two-run double to left by Brian Blasik.
After a scoreless third, the Flyers added two more in the fourth. Jimmy Roesinger drew a leadoff walk and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Glover. Then Blasik came through with a single through the left side that knocked in Mel Skochdopole.
Dayton pushed its advantage to 5-1 in its next turn at bat with a solo shot by to left center by Dany Welch.
Before the Flyers could pull away any further, the Minutemen took one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman Dylan Begin was hit by a pitch, moved to third on an error and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Anthony Serino.
UMass followed up by climbing to within 5-4 of Dayton in the sixth. Gedman sent a single up the middle to start the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. Senior Peter Copa drew a walk before both runners moved up to scoring position on another pitch to the backstop. Junior Tom Conley singled through the left side, driving in Gedman and Copa came in on a sacrifice fly by senior Kyle Multner. Begin continued the inning with a double to left that moved Conley to third, but the Flyers managed to escape the one-out jam still holding a one-run lead. Roesinger snared a ball hit down the line by freshman Nick Sanford and Mike Hauschild induced a fly ball of the bat of Serino to end the threat.
Hauschild held the Minutemen off the board for the remainder of the contest to pick up the win (6-3) in a complete game effort after Dayton tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. C.J. Gillman doubled to center and pinch runner Ian Hundley scored on a misplayed ball in the outfield. In his outing, Hauschild allowed four runs on eight hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Junior Robert Machado (2-4) took the loss for UMass. He went 6.2 innings in his start and let up five runs, three earned, on nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Gedman and Conley both finished 2-for-4 at the plate for The Minutemen with an RBI apiece, while Gedman scored twice, as well. Serino batted 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Blasik provided the bulk of the offense for the Flyers as he was 3-for-5 with three RBI. Skochdopole and Coughlin both batted 2-for-4 with a run scored.
UMass will next travel to Siena on Tuesday, Apr. 12, and will take on the Saints in a 4 p.m. contest.
