Seven From Field Hockey Recognized For Academic Excellence

AMHERST, Mass. - Seven UMass field hockey players were honored on Wednesday when the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced the 2010 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Squad. Alyssa Ineson, Elizabeth Karns, Molly MacDonnell, Alexa Sikalis, Callie Sweigart, Alesha Widdall, and Thando Zono were all recognized for having cumulative GPAs of 3.30 or higher.

Sweigart and Widdall are both being honored for the third straight year. Karns receives her first Academic Squad award as a sophomore, while the other four, all in the first full years at UMass, receive their first honors.

Widdall, a two-time All-American, was named 2010 Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year and the UMass Female Fall Scholar Athlete.

Seven National Academic Squad members is tied with 2008 for the second-most in program history, trailing only eight in 2005.

The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2010-11 academic year.
