WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore Shakia Robinson was the top scorer for UMass with 14 points and added six rebounds, while senior Cerie Mosgrove followed with 13. Senior Megan Zullo added nine points and sophomore Dee Montgomery led the squad in rebounds for a second consecutive game, pulling down nine and dished three assists.
After UMass began the first half with a 5-4 lead on a three by Mosgrove at the 15:37 mark, George Washington went on an 11-0 run over a stretch of 2:29 to build a 15-5 advantage and prompt a timeout by the Minutewomen. The Colonials went up by as many as 16 in the period before UMass managed a 7-2 run to trim the deficit to 31-20 at the break.
The closest the Minutewomen would come to overtaking George Washington in the remainder of the contest came midway through the second half. After Danni Jackson converted a pair of free throws, Zullo and junior Emilie Teuscher drained consecutive three-pointers to pull UMass within six, 47-41, with 7:41 on the clock. However, the Colonials responded with the next seven straight points to push their lead back to double figures and led by 11 or more the rest of the way.
The Minutewomen shot 16-for-53 (30.2%) overall, 7-for-21 (33.3%) from beyond the arc and 7-for-10 (70%) at the free throw line. George Washington made 20-of-48 (41.7%) from the field, 6-for-17 (35.3%) from three and 16-of-20 (80%) free throws on the afternoon.
Tara Booker paced GW with a double-double on 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jackson chipped in with 16 points and six assists. Ivy Abiona totaled 10 points and grabbed six boards, Sara Mostafa contributed eight points and Brooke Wilson registered six rebounds.
UMass returns to the Mullins Center for its next contest as the squad will play host to Rhode Island on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m.
