Rowers End Fall Season At Foot Of The Charles

The UMass rowing team heads back to the Charles River for the Foot of the Charles Regatta on Saturday, November 12 to close out their fall racing schedule. Last week, the novice rowers competed at the Green Monster Regatta at Dartmouth College and finished in tenth place out of 16 boats. This week brings another novice-only race, and the Minutewomen look to end their season with success.
Checking the Forecast
• Saturday looks to be sunny with a high of 55 degrees. The Minutewomen will be battling some wind, with speeds reaching up to 17 miles per hour.
Last Year at the Foot of the Charles Regatta
• Last year the Lightweight 8+ grabbed a seventh place finish, just seven seconds outside of a top five finish.
• The Novice 8+ finished in 12th place with a time of 14:34.00.
The 2011-2012 Minutewomen
• This year's squad has lost eleven seniors, including coxswains Samantha Schonerr and Carly Payne.
• The team returned 25 letterwinners from last season. This year's captains are seniors Kendall Bennett and Emily Boucher.
The 2011 Fall Schedule
• This years schedule will look very familiar to veteran rowers, as it will once again start at the Head of the Housatonic on October 8. From there the novices will return home for the Pumpkin Head Regatta, while the rest of the squad will travel to Middletown Conn. for the Head of the Connecticut on October 16.
• The weekend of October 22 will consist of the 47th annual Head of the Charles Regatta, where Coach Jim Dietz will also be competing. From there the Minutewomen will race at the Head of the Fish in Saratoga, N.Y., followed by the Green Monster in Dartmouth, N.H.
• The UMass Rowing team will round out their fall schedule in Boston at the Foot of the Charles.
Boucher Represents USA In Rowing World Championship...Again
• Emily Boucher competed at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships again this year in the Lightweight Single Sculls. This is her second year in a row that she competed in the event for the US National team.
• In trials, Boucher came in first with a time of 8:15.87 and had a time of 8:03.98 in the finals for trials. She beat her nearest competitor by 16 seconds.
• In the finals in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Boucher finished third in the first heat with a time of 8:40.21, outstroking Hungary in the last 1000 meters. In the Repechage race, she placed fourth with a time of 8:15.88 behind Paraguay, France, and Germany, but was good enough to land her in the semifinals. She placed second in the semifinal race with a time of 8:20.44 after losing pace with the Hungarian boat in the last 1000 meters.
• Boucher finished in fourth place in the finals with a time of 8:02.55, after a surge in the last 500 meters that put her at a finish only seven seconds behind the winning boat.
