AMHERST, Mass. - Christina Amorose scored with 6:25 left in the second half to break a scoreless tie and give Richmond a 1-0 victory over UMass field hockey on a cold Senior Day at Garber Field on Friday afternoon. The loss snaps a streak of 15 Atlantic 10 victories in a row for the Minutewomen and creates a three-way tie in the loss column atop the conference standings.
UMass' last A-10 regular season loss was over two years ago, on Oct. 23, 2009, and was also a 1-0 decision at Garber Field against the Spiders.
UMass' A-10 slate is now complete at 5-1, while Temple (4-1) plays Lock Haven on Sunday and Richmond (4-1) faces La Salle on Sunday.
UMass controlled much of the play in the first half and had several scoring chances, but could not get a shot by Richmond goalie Anna Zarkoski. The Minutewomen went into halftime with a 7-1 shot advantage.
The Spiders started to turn the momentum in their favor in the second half. Amarose knocked a high pass from Katelin Peterson out of the air and past Alesha Widdall for the games lone goal with just 6:25 remaining. The officials met briefly after the goal, but the sophomore's fifth tally of the season was upheld after the discussion.
Richmond held a 12-3 shot advantage in the second half to give it a 13-10 edge for the game. Penalty corners were 6-4 in favor of the Spiders.
Widdall made five saves in the senior All-American's final game at Garber Field, all of which came in the second half.
Freshman defender Lauren Allymohamed recorded her second defensive save of the season in the second half as well.
Prior to the game, a ceremony was held honoring seniors Widdall, Christine Cutry, Amanda Dietz, and Nikki Panciocco.
The Minutewomen close the regular season on Sunday when they travel to Providence for a 2 p.m. non-conference game.
