Minutemen Tie For Ninth At Great Dane Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Ken O'Brien's indoor track and field squad provided another solid performance at Friday's Great Dane Invitational being hosted by the University of Albany. In a field of 24 teams, the Minutemen tied for ninth with Maryland-Eastern Shore as both squads tallied 33 points.

The distance medley relay team comprised of Daniel Barry, Joe Doyle, Sean Duncan, and Scott VanderMolen set the tone early for UMass as the quad qualified for the IC4A Championships by placing second in the event with a stellar mark of 10:09.13. Also qualifying for the IC4A Championships along with the New Englands was superb senior Tyler Cotto in the 60 meter hurdles. The Holliston, Mass. Native placed his typical first in the event, crossing the line at 8.05.

A-10 pole vault champion Sean Busch, continued to improve on Friday in just the season's second meet. The senior jumper reached a height of 15-3, good enough to qualify for the New England Championships and to place fourth overall in the event.

The leaping lizard duo of Zachary Koncki and Daniel Wu proved useful in the Empire State as the duo placed fourth and fifth consecutively in the long jump with marks of 22-6.25 and 22-5 respectively. Both Minutemen qualified for the New England Championships.

Rounding out the seven total qualifiers on Friday was Kevin Spieler in the men's weight throw. The senior threw for a mark of 52-9.25, placing eighth while qualifying for the New England Championships.

The men's track squad returns to action next Saturday, January 28th as the team travels to Roxbury, Mass. for the Reebok Boston Indoor Games .
