AMHERST, Mass. - Katie Kelly and Lindsay Bowman swept the Atlantic 10 field hockey weekly awards on Tuesday as they were named Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively. Each scored two goals in a 2-0 week for the Minutewomen (3-3) that saw them defeat two previously unbeaten teams in No. 4 UConn (3-1) and Yale (3-1).
Kelly, the squad's senior captain, led UMass to a comeback victory at Yale on Sunday. Trailing 2-0 in the second half, the Dedham, Mass. native put UMass on the board with a goal with just over 15 minutes left. After Bowman scored the game-tying goal to send the game to overtime, Kelly scored the game winner in the extra period on a one-on-one with goalie, giving UMass the 3-2 victory.
Kelly leads UMass with five goals on the season and she now has 30 in her career.
Bowman made sure the first goal of her career was a big one, scoring in the 21st minute to give UMass a 1-0 victory over No. 4 UConn on Saturday at Garber Field. It was the Minutewomen's first win over the Huskies in a decade and broke a string of 10-straight UConn wins over UMass. The freshman from Palmyra, Pa.'s second career goal was crucial as well, coming the next day at Yale with 6:04 left to tie the game before Kelly's goal won the game in overtime.
Bowman was named UMass Co-Athlete of the Week on Monday, along with football quarterback Kyle Havens.
The Minutewomen hit the road against to quality opponents this weekend, taking on No. 20 American on Saturday and No. 2 Maryland on Sunday.
