AMHERST, Mass. - After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 65 minutes of action, Emily Kozniuk scored off a penalty stroke to give No. 9 Boston College a 1-0 victory over UMass in the season-opener for both sides on Friday afternoon at Garber Field. The UMass Invitational continues on Saturday when the Eagles take on No. 17 Indiana at 2 p.m. and concludes on Sunday with the Minutewomen and Hoosiers squaring off at 2 p.m.
The Eagles were awarded a penalty stroke after a UMass foul in the circle with 4:30 left. Kozniuk's stroke made its way inside the left post to break the scoreless tie.
UMass pressured in the closing minutes, earning two penalty corners in the final three minutes. After not being able to get a shot on the first corner, Makaela Potts' blast missed wide right with under a minute left.
Senior captain Katie Kelly led all players with five shots, including one that was stopped by BC goalie Kristine Stigas with 3:35 left in the game.
Alesha Widdall made four saves in goal for the Minutewomen, while Stigas finished with five.
Final shots were 10-8 in favor of BC, while penalty corners went the way of the Eagles as well, 6-3.
