AMHERST, Mass. - Summer league baseball season will kick off tonight in both the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL). UMass will be represented in both with seven Minutemen in the NECBL and one, rising-sophomore Aaron Zaleznik, pitching in the NYCBL.
UMass infielder Matt Gedman, outfielder Anthony Serino and pitchers Nick Serino and Leif Sorenson will all begin their seasons tonight as members of the Lowell All-Americans, squaring off against UMass catcher Tom Conley's squad, the Keene Swamp Bats, tonight at 7 p.m. in Keene, N.H. Nick Serino and Gedman both begin their second stint with the club. Serino was named to the NECBL All-Star team while pitching for the All-Americans last summer.
Second baseman Eric Fredette and pitcher Glen Misho will both be competing for teams that will kick off their inaugural seasons tonight, the Bristol Collegiate Baseball Club and the Laconia Muskrats. Fredette, the Minutemen's batting average leader this spring, will square off against the North Adams SteepleCats tonight in North Adams, Mass., at 6:30 p.m. The Muskrats will play host to the Sanford Mainers at 7 p.m. in Laconia, N.H.
Though the NYCBL kicks off its action this evening, Zaleznik's team, the Elmira Pioneers, will not open up until next Monday, Jun. 7, at 7 p.m. on the road against the Niagara Power.
