Men's Track Wraps Up Day One Action In Dedham

DEDHAM, Mass. - After one day of competition at the New England Championships, the UMass men's track team has yet to see its best performances of the weekend. Friday marked a day of preliminaries along with some finals, which will lead into the final day of competition on Saturday.
In the 10,000 meter run it was Jason Ayr leading the way for the Minutemen with an impressive second place finish. By crossing the line at 31:03.47, the senior distance qualified for next weekend's IC4A Championships.
Continuing the senior leadership on day one was Andrew McCann in the 5,000 meter run. He placed eighth overall, crossing the line at 14:56.47. Previously McCann qualified for the IC4A Championships at the Larry Ellis Invite (4/16), finishing in a season personal best of 14:34.03. The men's decathlon also came to completion on Friday, as the top scorer for UMass was Mark Hewitt who took sixth overall with 5,550 points.
Other notable competitors for the Minutemen were Zachary Koncki and Nick Otis. The sophomore and freshman duo both participated in the preliminaries of their respective hurdling events. For Koncki, he took ninth in the 110M hurdles with a time of 15.16. The freshman, Otis, placed tenth in the 400M hurdles, crossing the line at 55.00.
Saturday's action will include outstanding performers thus far this season for UMass including Sean Busch in the pole vault and a 4x800 meter relay team. The relay team for UMass is the top seeded quad in the meet with a time of 7:28.55. The start time for day two is 10 am.
