AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass rowing team will head to Philadelphia, Pa. for the 72nd annual Dad Vail Regatta, to be held on Friday and Saturday. The Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 schools from the U.S. and Canada scheduled to compete. Live results will be available throughout the week from Powerhouse Timing.

The Minutewomen faced tough competition last weekend in preparation for Dad Vail's this weekend. Massachusetts squared off with Dartmouth, Cornell and Buffalo in several Varsity 8+ races and Varsity 4+ races.

Last Season At Dad Vails:
• Last season at the Dad Vail Regatta, the Minutewomen's JV Eight boat placed third overall while the Varsity Eight took second in the Second Final. The women's Varsity Lightweight 4 took silver in the Grand Final.
• The Second Varsity Eight completed their course in 7:02.804, finishing behind Buffalo and San Diego. The boat defeated Purdue, Connecticut, and North Carolina in the Grand Final. In the first day and a half of competition, the boat finished first in its heat to reach the Grand Final.
• The Varsity Lightweight Four also placed first in their first heat to reach the Grand Final, where they placed second and came in just over four seconds behind winner Pittsburgh. The boat finished the course in 7:43.881.
• The Varsity Eight did not reach the Grand Final, but placed ninth in their first heat with a time of 4:40.145. During their second heat, they placed third with a time of 6:45.494.
• The Varsity Heavyweight Four and Novice Eight went on to the semi-finals after their first heat, but did not advance to the finals.

Checking the Forecast:
• Friday's forecast looks to be favorable to rowing conditions, with temperatures ranging from 62-75 degrees. A slight wind is expected throughout the day, but should top out at 8 mph.
• Isolated thunderstorms may cause problems for Day Two of Dad Vails, with strong winds at 19 mph. Temperatures may reach 80 degrees at some points during the day.

Last Time Out:

• The UMass Rowing team faced tough competition last weekend against Dartmouth, Cornell and Buffalo at the Double Dual Regatta. The Massachusetts first and second Varsity 8+ boats each finished fourth in the races, while the Lightweight 8+ knocked off the Bulls by nearly 10 seconds.
• UMass and Buffalo squared off in the first round of the day, with the Bulls winning four of the five head-to-head races. The highlight of round one was the Massachusetts Lightweight 8+ ten-second win over Buffalo with a time of 6:32.30, steered by Carly Payne. The Varsity 8+, coxswained by Samantha Schnoerr, nearly knocked off Buffalo in the opening race of the day, but ultimately fell by three seconds with a time of 6:29.80. Molly Bogle's Varsity 4+ boat saw a similar result in its race despite clocking in with a time of 7:11.00. The Bulls' Second Varsity 8+ handled Em Chiu and the Minutewomen (6:50.90), winning by a margin of 19 seconds. UMass' Third Varsity 8+ suffered a similar fate against Buffalo, falling with a time of 7:10.30.
• The winners of the UMass-Buffalo and Dartmouth-Cornell series faced off in round two in the afternoon. The UMass V8+ improved on its round one time with a finish of 6:26.40, but the Big Red was too much with a first place finish at 6:09.40. The second Minutewomen V8+ also raced faster in its second heat against Dartmouth at 6:31.60, but once again it was the Ivy League getting the best of UMass as the Big Green clocked in at 6:19.70.
• The third UMass V8+ knocked off Dartmouth in the third-place race with a time of 6:36.50, while the Varsity 4+ fell to the Big Green by five seconds at 7:08.80. The Minutewomen raced their Novice 4+ in the Second Varsity 4+ race on Saturday, but fell to Cornell in back to back races.

Looking Down The River:


• Following this weekend UMass will get a couple weeks off before heading to Mercer, N.J. for the USRowing Collegaite Championships on May 21 for its final team race of the season.
• The event will be open to all undergraduate rowers, varsity or club, from all divisions and will offer racing in a wide range of both sculling and sweep events geared toward many of the same boat classes raced at the World Rowing Championships.

Donovan Racks Up Academic Accolades:
• Senior Megan Donovan (Orange, Mass.) was recently named the UMass Female Scholar Athlete of the Year at the Senior Banquet on Monday. She posted a 3.966 GPA as a kinesiology major, and was also named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Donovan was the lone Minutewoman named to the A-10 All-Academic team. • It was the second straight season that Donovan was named to the Academic All-Conference team, and was also nominated for the Cosida Academic All-American Team, presented by ESPN The Magazine.
• Donovan has been an integral part of the Minutewomen squad throughout the 2009-10 season. She was a member of the Second Varsity 8+ and Quad boats that earned runner-up finishes at the annual Atlantic 10 Championships. Her First Team All-Conference selection helped Massachusetts to a second place finish at the conference championships out of a nine-team field.

Four Minutewomen Named To Atlantic 10 All-Conference Teams:

• Following the Atlantic 10 Championships, four Minutewomen were named to the A-10 All-Conference teams. Samantha Smith and Megan Donovan were named to the first team, while Amanda Doolin and Alexandra DiMatteo were named to the second team. 

• Smith, Doolin and DiMatteo are part of UMass' Varsity 8+ boat that finished fifth last weekend at 6:54.04. It was the first All-Conference selection for Smith and DiMatteo while Doolin was named to the second team for the second straight season. Doolin broke the Novice 2K erg record in 2008.

• Donovan races in the Second Varsity 8+, which finished second last weekend at the A-10 Championships with a time of 6:49.91. She also raced in the Quad, which placed second (7:22.77) to secure her first All-Conference Selection.

Varsity Four Setting The Pace:

• The UMass Varsity 4+ has been pacing the Minutewomen throughout the past few weeks. The squad of Jennifer Coyne, Meredith Kearney, Kathryn Kern, Jessica Stern and Molly Bogle (coxs) finished first at the A-10 Championships. The boat also competed in the Petite Final at the Knecht Cup, racing to a second place finish. While the members have changed sporadically as the season's progressed, Kern has been the lone Minutewoman in the boat all season.

Boucher Finding Her Stroke:


• Rising sophomore Emily Boucher (Lee, N.H.) is quickly making name for herself on the UMass Rowing squad. As part of the Second Varsity 8+ at the Atlantic 10 Championships, Boucher helped the boat to a second place finish in the Grand Final with a time of 6:49.91. She also helped the Quad place second behind St. Joseph's (7:22.77).
 • Boucher finished first in the Single at the Knecht Cup, finishing with a time of 8:37.15 ahead of second place Duke. She finished second in Saturday's semifinals (8:49.37) to qualify for the final event. She has also raced in the Varsity Four at both Holy and at the Yankee Cup.

UMass In The National Polls:



• The Minutewomen jumped three spots to No. 9 in USRowing Collegiate Poll for the Lightweight Varsity Eight. Massachusetts has also been ranked at No. 12 and No. 10 at various points during the season. Last weekend's opponent Buffalo is nipping at UMass' heels at No. 10 in the May 5 poll. • UMass hung steady in the cMax Rankings No. 52 for the second straight week. Also included in the poll were conference foes Temple, Fordham, St. Joseph's and Rhode Island.

Dietz Elected To National Rowing Hall of Fame:



 • UMass Head Coach Jim Dietz was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame on March 21 at Mystic Seaport. Dietz competed in two Olympics in the men's single in 1972 and 1976, where he finished fifth and seventh, respectively. He was also a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team in the men's double.


• As an athlete, Coach Dietz was a five-time member of the U.S. World Championship team in the 1x and 2x, and won a silver medal in the single at the 1974 Lecerne World Championships.



• Dietz won more than 30 United States national titles between 1968 and 1983, and 25 Canadian national titles.


• Dietz is the only rowing coach in UMass History, and has guided his teams to 13 Atlantic 10 titles and was named the A-10 Coach of the Year on seven different occasions.

20 Rowers Named To A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll:



• Bernadette V. McGlade, Commissioner of the Atlantic 10, announced that 103 UMass student-athletes have been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll following the Fall 2009 semester. Among those, 20 members of the rowing team were included on the list.


• To be an Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree, a student-athlete must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or better. The A-10 named nearly 1,200 athletes to this list.


• The Minutewomen were led by the junior and freshman classes, which had six student-athletes from each class, while the senior and sophomore classes had four representatives each.
