Rowing Heads To New Jersey For Knecht Cup

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass Rowing team will begin its first of two weekends in New Jersey when it makes the trip to Camden to compete in the Knecht Cup. The weekend marks the first two-day race for Massachusetts, which serves as a final tune-up before next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championships. With UMass entered in over a dozen races, nearly all Minutewomen are slated to compete throughout the weekend.

The race will be held on the Cooper River, the same location as the A-10 Championships, and will kick off at 7:00 AM with the Women's Varsity Pair. The weather in Camden is expected to cooperate, with temperatures ranging from the low-60's to mid-70's on Saturday and Sunday.

Scouting the Competition:
• With over 50 schools from across the country participating in the Knecht Cup this weekend, the Minutewomen will be facing tough competition throughout the two-day competition.
• Among the teams competing are Atlantic 10 opponents Duquesne, Fordham, Temple and La Salle. Temple and Duquesne placed fifth and sixth in last season's conference championships, respectively, while Fordham and La Salle rounded out the bottom two spots.
• Villanova will play host to the annual event in 2010. The Wildcats finished seventh in last season's Big East Championships, highlighted by a second place finish in the Varsity Eight Petite Final.

Last Season At the Knecht Cup:
• At the 2009 Knecht Cup, the Minutewomen reached the finals in ten races, finishing first in three. The Varsity Pair saw two UMass boats in the final race, with the UMass B Boat placing first with a time of 8:57.40 and the UMass A boat finishing sixth at 9:17.00.
• Massachusetts claimed the Second Novice Eight title over Delaware with a time of 8:58.10, while the UMass Quad ran away from Villanova in the final race, defeating the Wildcats by 40 seconds with a time of 8:40.80.

Last Time Out:

 • UMass competed on Lake Quinisgamond at Holy Cross last Saturday, finishing second in four of its five races. New Hampshire, MIT and Williams, the nation's No. 1 team in Division III, also participated in the races. The Minutewomen entered seven boats in five races. The Minutewomen's lone win of the day came in the Novice Eight, which UMass took in 8:17.44. UMass' second boat in the race finished third with a time of 8:46.60.
• Williams finished first in each of the three Varsity Eight races, while Massachusetts rowed consistently with times between 7:30.00 and 7:45.00. The first Varsity Eight, coxswained by Samantha Schnoerr, finished with a time of 7:29.51. Molly Bogle led the Second Varsity Eight, who crossed the line with a time of 7:45.30, 11 seconds ahead of the Crusader boat.
• Despite headwinds increasing throughout the day, Williams continued to lead the pack, completing the Third Varsity Eight with a time of 7:14.60 while Em Chiu's boat finished in 7:29.50. The Minutewomen had two boats in the Varsity Four race, but that didn't stop Williams from taking a five-second win over Schnoerr's boat. The 4+ boat, coxswained by Carly Payne, placed fifth with a time of 9:08.50.

Looking Down The River:
• UMass will compete in the 15th annual Atlantic 10 Championships next weekend in Pennsauken, N.J. Massachusetts has own all but one conference title dating back to 1996, including the 2009 A-10 crown.
• The race will be held on the Cooper River, the same location as the Knecht Cup. Trails for the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ will be held from 8:00 AM - 9:10 AM before the championship races in the afternoon. For a complete schedule of events, click here.
• An awards ceremony will be held following the races at 2:40 PM, where medals and the Atlantic 10 Championship trophy will be awarded. Athletes named to conference teams will also be announced at that time.

UMass In The National Polls:

• The Minutewomen were ranked No. 10 for the second straight week in the Lightweight Varsity Eight in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, announced on April 7. Also included in the poll was MIT at No. 7, while Atlantic 10 foe Duquesne and Dayton received votes.
• UMass was also included in the cMax Rankings, checking in at No. 37. Several of this weekend's opponents were mentioned in the latest poll, as well.

Dietz Elected To National Rowing Hall of Fame:

• UMass Head Coach Jim Dietz was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame on March 21 at Mystic Seaport. Dietz competed in two Olympics in the men's single in 1972 and 1976, where he finished fifth and seventh, respectively. He was also a member of the 1980 United States Olympic team in the men's double.

• As an athlete, Coach Dietz was a five-time member of the U.S. World Championship team in the 1x and 2x, and won a silver medal in the single at the 1974 Lecerne World Championships.

• Dietz won more than 30 United States national titles between 1968 and 1983, and 25 Canadian national titles.
• Dietz is the only rowing coach in UMass History, and has guided his teams to 13 Atlantic 10 titles and was named the A-10 Coach of the Year on seven different occasions.

Atlantic 10 Championships Set For Mid-April:

• For the 15th straight season, Massachusetts will compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships, scheduled for April 17 in Pennsauken, N.J. The Minutewomen are the defending conference champions, and will look to capture their 14th all-time title.

20 Rowers Named To A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll:

• Bernadette V. McGlade, Commissioner of the Atlantic 10, announced that 103 UMass student-athletes have been named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll following the Fall 2009 semester. Among those, 20 members of the rowing team were included on the list.

• To be an Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree, a student-athlete must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or better. The A-10 named nearly 1,200 athletes to this list.
• The Minutewomen were led by the junior and freshman classes, which had six student-athletes from each class, while the senior and sophomore classes had four representatives each.
