AMHERST, Mass. -

After a very successful regular season that saw the Minutewomen go 12-7, the UMass women's tennis team will now turn their attention to St. Louis, Missouri and the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship beginning on Friday, April 23. UMass has not won and A-10 Championship since 2001, when they defeated George Washington, 4-2, in the finals held in Hamilton, N.J. The team finished sixth overall last year in the tournament, going 1-2 in their three matches.

UMass Earns Sixth Seed
After a 12-7 season, the Minutewomen have been slotted as the sixth seed in the 2010 Atlantic 10 tournament and will take on 11th seeded St. Joe's in the first round. The team's have not faced-off against each other yet this season, as UMass has only played one other A-10 opponent when they defeated URI, 7-0, back on October 14.

Scouting the Hawks St. Joe's is coming off a 7-0 win over St. Peter's in their regular season finale on Tuesday. They finished the year with a 6-18 record in dual matches and went 2-5 against A-10 opponents. The Hawks have played some of the same opponents of the Minutewomen, including falling to URI and NJIT, both of whom UMass beat earlier this year.

Last Time Out
The Minutewomen tennis team continued their dominance on their home court, celebrating Senior Day with a, 5-2, victory over Quinnipiac on April 12. The win improved the team's record to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in Amherst this year.

The team jumped out to a quick lead in doubles play, taking two out of the three matches to claim the point. Tanisha Hodgson and Julia Comas teamed up to knock-off Rachel Cantor and Sarah Viebrock, 8-4, at second doubles. With the two teams even at a doubles match apiece, Kaitlyn Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence earned a big break point, and went on to serve for the victory against Natalie Duckor and Shawna Sarson, winning 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

UMass would waste no time in clinching the victory, winning three singles matches in a row to go up 4-0. Carpenter was the first to finish at fifth singles, making quick work of Duckor, 6-1, 6-1. Comas continued her impressive play, coming back to beat Mary Wilson after losing the first two games of the first set. The freshman went on to win 12 of the next 15 games to win the match, 6-4, 6-1.

Lecluyse was not to be outdone on her senior day, coming all the way back after losing in a first set tiebreak to claim her 51st career singles victory. The captain went on to beat Viebrock, 6-7, 6-3, 10-7. Candynce Boney also continued her stellar singles play, winning her sixth-straight match at No. 2 singles, defeating Cantor, 6-1, 6-4.

Lecluyse Ranked Among the Best
Senior captain Maude Lecluyse (Montreal, Canada), who was honored at Senior Day on April 12, will find herself ranked among the best to come through UMass when she finishes her career. The match against Quinnipiac marked Lecluyse's 109th career match, putting second all-time at UMass. The senior also stands fourth in career doubles wins with 66, while also picking up her 51st singles win against the Bobcats. During her four years at UMass, Lecluyse has been a four-time Academic All-American.

Boney On A Roll
Junior Candynce Boney (Las Vegas, Nevada) won her sixth-straight singles match on April 12, defeating Rachel Cantor of Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-4. Since moving to No. 2 singles, Boney has gone 7-2 and currently ranks second on the team this year with 14 singles wins. During her streak, Boney has registered four straight-set victories while being taken to a third-set only twice.

Home, Sweet Home
The Minutewomen are 7-2 in Amherst this season, with their only losses coming against Boston College and Boston University. In four of their seven home wins, UMass has swept all of the points and gone on to 7-0 victories.

Comas Steps Up In No. 1 Spot
Freshman Julia Comas (Barcelona, Spain) has continued to play well since being moved to the No. 1 singles spot, improving to 5-2 this season after beating Quinnipiac's Mary Wilson on April 12. Comas currently leads the team with 15 wins in singles play to just six total losses. For her outstanding play, the freshman has twice earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors.
