KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass baseball team captured its second consecutive Atlantic 10 series, pounding out 13 runs on 13 hits to defeat Rhode Island, 13-1, in game three on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. With the victory, the Minutemen improve to 7-19 overall and 5-7 in A-10 play, while the Rams drop to 17-16, 7-5 in the conference.
UMass plated the first run of the ballgame in the first inning following three singles by freshman Ryan Cusick, junior Matt Gedman and senior Mike Donato, which set up a sacrifice fly by senior Brian Baudinet.
In the bottom of the second, URI managed to tie the score at one. Zoey Angulo poked a leadoff single through the right side, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a single to right by Dan Haverstick.
In their next turn at bat, the Minutemen began to pull away. After sophomore Alex Fischer reached on an error to begin the third, Matt Gedman dropped a perfectly-placed bunt single down the third base line. Donato sacrificed the runners over to second and third before the next batter, Baudinet, lofted a two-run single into center. Following a walk to junior Peter Copa, sophomore Tom Conley drove in Baudinet with a single through the left side. Senior Garrett Glashoff capped off the four-run inning with an RBI single that plated Copa.
UMass then added three more runs in the top of the fourth to push its advantage to 8-1. Baudinet brought in Matt Gedman and Donato with a bases-clearing triple to the fence in center. The senior centerfielder then came home on a bunt single by Copa.
The Minutemen later capped off the scoring with a five-run seventh. Two walks and an error resulted in a run being forced in with the third base on balls of the frame, drawn by Cusick. Then with one away, Matt Gedman crushed Tyler Brennan's 1-1 offering over the fence in right for his first career grand slam.
Senior Bryan Leigh made quick work of the Rams to record the win (2-4) in his second complete game of the week. He let up just one run on nine hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Starter Anthony Pisani (0-1) took the loss for URI as he allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits with no walks and one strikeout in 2.1 innings on the hill.
Eight UMass players combined for the squad's 13 hits, paced by Matt Gedman's 3-for-6 performance, four RBI and three runs scored. Baudinet finished 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Donato (2-for-4) and Conley (2-for-4) both had muti-hit games, as well.
Angulo was the lone member of the Rams to register multiple hits on the afternoon. He finished 2-for-2 with a run scored.
The Minutemen will return to Earl Lorden field on Tuesday, Apr. 20, where the squad will play host to Central Connecticut at 3 p.m.
