Minutewomen Set To Close Out Season At Home

AMHERST, Mass. - After rain postponed the match last week, the UMass women's tennis team will give it another try as they welcome Albany to Mullins Courts on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. for the team's regular season finale. The Minutewomen are coming off an impressive win over Quinnipiac on Senior Day their last time out, beating the Bobcats, 5-2, to improve to 12-7 overall on the year. UMass has won five of its last six matches, as they get ready for the Atlantic 10 Tournament April 22-25 in St. Louis, Missouri.
Last Time Out
The Minutewomen tennis team continued their dominance on their home court Monday afternoon, celebrating Senior Day with a, 5-2, victory over Quinnipiac. The win improved the team's record to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in Amherst this year. Prior to the match, the team honored senior captain Maude Lecluyse, L
The team jumped out to a quick lead in doubles play, taking two out of the three matches to claim the point. Tanisha Hodgson and Julia Comas teamed up to knock-off Rachel Cantor and Sarah Viebrock, 8-4, at second doubles. With the two teams even at a doubles match apiece, Kaitlyn Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence earned a big break point, and went on to serve for the victory against Natalie Duckor and Shawna Sarson, winning 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
UMass would waste no time in clinching the victory, winning three singles matches in a row to go up 4-0. Carpenter was the first to finish at fifth singles, making quick work of Duckor, 6-1, 6-1. Comas continued her impressive play, coming back to beat Mary Wilson after losing the first two games of the first set. The freshman went on to win 12 of the next 15 games to win the match, 6-4, 6-1.
Lecluyse was not to be outdone on her senior day, coming all the way back after losing in a first set tiebreak to claim her 51st career singles victory. The captain went on to beat Viebrock, 6-7, 6-3, 10-7. Candynce Boney also continued her stellar singles play, winning her sixth-straight match at No. 2 singles, defeating Cantor, 6-1, 6-4.
Lecluyse Ranked Among the Best
Senior captain Maude Lecluyse (Montreal, Canada), who was honored at Senior Day on Monday, will find herself ranked among the best to come through UMass when she finishes her career. Monday's match at Quinnipiac marked Lecluyse's 109th career match, putting second all-time at UMass. The senior also stands fourth in career doubles wins with 66, while also picking up her 51st singles win against the Bobcats. During her four years at UMass, Lecluyse has been a four-time Academic All-American.
Boney On A Roll
Junior Candynce Boney (Las Vegas, Nevada) won her sixth-straight singles match on Monday, defeating Rachel Cantor of Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-4. Since moving to No. 2 singles, Boney has gone 7-2 and currently ranks second on the team this year with 14 singles wins. During her streak, Boney has registered four straight-set victories while being taken to a third-set only twice.
Home, Sweet Home
The Minutewomen are 7-2 in Amherst this season, with their only losses coming against Boston College and Boston University. In four of their seven home wins, UMass has swept all of the points and gone on to 7-0 victories.
Comas Steps Up In No. 1 Spot
Freshman Julia Comas (Barcelona, Spain) has continued to play well since being moved to the No. 1 singles spot, improving to 5-2 this season after beating Quinnipiac's Mary Wilson on Monday. Comas currently leads the team with 15 wins in singles play to just six total losses. For her great play last week, the freshman was named Atlantic-10 Co-Player / Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
Scouting the Great Danes
Albany enters the week with a 6-5 overall record in dual matches, snapping a four-match losing streak their last time out with a, 7-0, win over Manhattan. The Great Danes are 4-4 on the road this year. In their last match, the squad swept all of the points against Manhattan, led in No. 1 singles by Livia Gherman who won, 7-5, 6-4, as well as teaming up with Laine Mackey at No. 1 doubles for a win. The team will take on Binghamton Wednesday afternoon before coming out to Amherst on Friday.

The Minutewomen will head to St. Louis, Missouri for the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship.
