WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The UMass baseball team out-hit William & Mary, 11-9, but could not overcome an early 6-0 deficit, dropping a 7-4 decision to the Tribe on Saturday afternoon. Despite bringing the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth, the Minutemen were unable to complete the comeback, falling to 0-8 on the year. William & Mary is now 12-6 overall and 11-2 at Plumeri Park.
Chris Forsten put the Tribe on the board in the first with a two-run single to center after walks to Ryan Brown and Tadd Bower, sandwiched around a base knock by Derrick Osteen, loaded the bases with no outs. Then with one away, an RBI groundout by Chris Jensen brought home Bower to increase the advantage to 3-0.
William & Mary followed up with another run in the second. Bryson Kemler drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a single by Brown and scored on a fielder's choice with Osteen picking up an RBI on the play.
The Tribe tallied two more runs in the third to push the score to 6-0. Ryan Williams sent a one-out double into right center and crossed the plate when the next batter, Jensen, knocked him in with a single. Jensen later came home for the team's sixth run on an RBI fielder's choice by Kemler.
In relief of starter Nick Serino, the UMass bullpen held William & Mary to just three hits and one run beyond the third inning, giving the Minutemen a chance at a comeback. UMass cut into its deficit, scoring twice in the top of the fifth. Infield singles by junior Matt Gedman and senior Garrett Glashoff, along with a walk to sophomore Tom Conley, loaded the bases with no outs. Senior Brian Baudinet plated Gedman with a sacrifice fly and junior Eric Fredette drove in Conley with an RBI double to left center. Glashoff attempted to come home on the play, as well, but was thrown out at the plate.
In the bottom of the seventh, William & Mary took one of the runs back as Williams was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and later scored on a one-out RBI double to right center by Jonathan Slattery.
With one down in the eighth, Matt Gedman hit a solo shot for his first home run of the year, which pushed the score to 7-3. The elder Gedman brother, Mike, followed up the next inning with a leadoff homer to right to pull UMass to within three. A walk to Conley and a single to center by Fredette brought the tying run to the plate with two away, but John Farrell fanned junior Cameron McMullen to end the game and log his second save of the season.
Serino suffered the loss (0-2) for the Minutemen, letting up six runs on six hits with five walks in 2.2 innings. Brett Koehler earned the win (1-0) for the Tribe. He threw 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Matt Gedman had a 3-for-4 performance at the plate to pace UMass, registering an RBI and two runs scored. Mike Gedman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Glashoff hit 2-for-4 and Fredette went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Osteen, Forsten and Slattery each batted 2-for-4 on the afternoon, combining for six of William & Mary's nine hits. Forsten and Jensen contributed two RBI apiece, while Williams scored twice.
The Minutemen will close out their series with the Tribe tomorrow, March 21, with game three set to begin at 1 p.m.
