Women's Track Closes Out Giegengack Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UMass women's track and field team finished up competition at the Giegengack Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen produced multiple scorers and were able to sustain their intensity over the long two-day meet.
Michelle Jenssen qualified for the New England Championships and placed seventh in the 400 meter run with a time of 58.72. Sophomore Deanna Julian had her best day of the season in the 500 meters with her time of 1:17.20. Julian finished in second and had previously qualified for the New England Championships.
The 4X400 team of Brittany Bakanowski, Erika Unger, Michelle Jenssen, and Deanna Julian took third with a time of 3:57.91. The 4X400 relay has been one of the Minutewomen's strongest events this season.
The final scorers for the track portion of the meet were Brittany Bakanowski and Gina Perno. Bakanowski placed fifth in the 500 meters (17.53) while Perno took fourth in the 800 meters (2:16.04).
In the shot put, Lisa Wilson posted a steady 45-00.25 and placed fifth. Freshman Nalis Mbianda was close behind Wilson as she placed sixth with her toss of 43-03.00. Junior Stephanie Aguguo took fifth in the triple jump with her mark of 36-05.00.
Rounding out the field events, Nicole Pompei continued her excellent freshman season by taking second in the pole vault (11-07.75). Also in the pole vault, senior Molly Chapin posted her best height of the season (10-06.00) and tied for sixth.
UMass will be back on the track next Friday, Feb. 12 when the squad heads to Boston for the Valentine Invitational.
