Women's Track Begins Competition At A-10 Championships

NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. - The UMass women's track and field team began competition at the Atlantic 10 Championships Friday morning. During the first day of competition, the Minutewomen posted 18 points to sit fifth. The squad will be sure to carry their successes from day one into the final day of the meet.
The distance medley relay team of Karen Roa, Michelle Jenssen, Courtney Baldwin, and Gina Perno led the Minutewomen once again. The team took third place with a time of 11:56.36. Stephanie Aguguo placed fourth and set her best mark of the season in the long jump (17-11.75), while fellow junior Ida Okkonen took seventh in the event with a mark of 17-10.75.
Rounding out the scorers for the day was Nicole Pompei. The standout freshman scored five points for the Minutewomen in the pole vault as she posted a mark of 11-09.75.
Three UMass runners also qualified for day two finals in their respective events. Senior Holly Heinricher will run in tomorrow's 200 meter final as she posted a seventh-place time of 25.93 in the preliminaries. Classmate Brittany Bakanowski will move on in the 500 as she took ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:17.81. Junior Gina Perno posted a time of 2:17.13 in the preliminaries of the 800 meter run, good for second.
