AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team competed in the Valentine Invitational Friday afternoon. The meet was hosted by Boston University and no score was kept. Many of the Minutewomen's top athletes did not compete, as the meet served as more of a warm-up for the A-10 Championships that are only a week away.

Highlighting the action for UMass was freshman Nicole Pompei. Pompei took third in the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75, and has not placed lower than third in any meet this season.

The 4X400 meter relay team of Brittany Bakanowski, Michelle Jenssen, Erika Unger, and Deanna Julian posted a new season best time in the event. The squad took fourth with a time of 3:54.21.

Brittany Bakanowski took eighth place in the 500 meters with a time of 1:18.01. Karen Roa improved upon her season best time of 5:06.89 in the mile by crossing at 5:05.73. Roa already qualified for the New England Championships in the event.

The Minutewomen will head to North Kingstown, R.I. next Friday for the Atlantic 10 Championships. The two-day meet will start at 9:30 on both Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20.
