BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore center Jasmine Watson scored 13 points in her return to the court and grabbed nine rebounds, but it was not enough to help the UMass women's basketball team to victory as the squad fell to Boston University 66-49, on Wednesday evening in Case Gym. The Minutewomen are now 1-8 on the season following the loss, while the Terriers improve to 3-7.
Senior Cerie Mosgrove led three UMass scorers in double figures with 15 points, aided by 3-for-5 shooting from three point range. Senior Megan Zullo joined Mosgrove and Watson, scoring 10 and extending her streak to six straight games in double figures. Sophomore Shakia Robinson corralled six rebounds and senior Stephanie Lawrence had five boards.
UMass held the lead throughout the majority of the first half until a three by Chantell Alford at the 5:15 mark kick-started a 14-5 run for BU to close out the period. Mo Moran's jumper with 21 seconds on the clock put the Terriers up by eight, the largest advantage of the period for either side, as BU took a 38-30 lead into the locker room at half time.
The Terriers kept the momentum coming out of the intermission. Zullo scored the first five of the Minutewomen's second half points to pull the squad to within six, but that was as close as UMass would get to overtaking BU. A basket by Caroline Stewart at 16:33 began a 7-2 run that extended the Terriers' lead to double figures for the first time, while BU went on to expand its advantage to as many as 19 in the final period.
Despite shooting 52.6% (10-for-19) in the opening half, the Minutewomen were limited to just 7-for-28 (25.0%) in the second and finished 17-for-47 overall (36.2%). UMass started off 6-for-8 (75.0%) from beyond the arc, but shot 1-for-8 (12.5%) after the intermission and were 7-for-16 (43.6%) for the contest. At the free throw line, the Minutewomen made 8-of-10 (80%).
Boston University shot 44.1% (26-for-59) overall, 8-for-24 (33.3%) from three and made 6-of-9 free throws (66.7%).
The Terriers had three scorers in double figures, paced by Mo Moran's 20 points. Moran also handed out seven assists and registered three steals. Alex Young and Alford contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively. Kerry Cashman corralled nine rebounds and Rashidat Agboola was just shy of a double-double with eight points and eight boards.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 11, when the squad will play host to Binghamton as the first half of a UMass basketball doubleheader at 4:30 p.m.
