AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's basketball team began the night with a 12-0 lead and never looked back, rolling to a 78-55 victory over Brown on Wednesday evening at the Mullins Center for Sharon Dawley's first win as UMass head coach. For a second straight game, the Minutewomen (1-6) shot over 50%, while holding Brown (2-5) to just 27.3% shooting in the contest.
Pacing the balanced UMass attack, senior Cerie Mosgrove totaled a career-high 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting and a 6-for-7 clip at the free throw line, while also grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore Shakia Robinson followed with 18 points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes on the floor and senior Megan Zullo scored in double figures for a third straight game, chipping in with 11. Zullo also handed out nine of the Minutewomen's 22 assists that came on 26 baskets and recorded five rebounds. Senior Stephanie Lawrence narrowly missed her first career double-double as she contributed 10 points and a career-high eight boards coming off the bench. Dee Montgomery added seven points and junior Emilie Teuscher equaled her career high in rebounds for a second consecutive game with six.
The Minutewomen came out flying from the start, racing to a 12-0 advantage just 3:30 into the contest. Back-to-back fastbreak layups by Mosgrove and Shakia Robinson prompted Brown to call its second time out of the night at 16:28.
The Bears fought back as layup by Lauren Clarke at the 11:50 mark kick-started an 11-4 run for the Bears over the next 4:49 that cut the deficit to four at 23-19. However, UMass responded with nine straight points to take its largest lead of the period, 13, with 3:05 remaining.
The Bears once again closed the gap to single digits with three jumpers in the final 2:46, but a layup by Lawrence at the buzzer gave the Minutewomen a nine-point edge at the intermission, 34-25.
Early in the second half, a layup by Sheila Dixon brought Brown to within five, but that was as close as the Bears would come to catching UMass the rest of the way. A three by Teuscher and a layup by Shakia Robinson quickly pushed the Minutewomen's lead back to double digits. UMass gradually pulled away from Brown, going up by 20 for the first time on a basket by Dee Montgomery with 7:36 to play. Zullo's three at 3:45 made it a 24-point advantage, the largest of the night.
The Minutewomen sunk 26-of-51 shots (51.0%) from the floor, making 7-of-17 (41.2%) from beyond the arc, and converted 19-of-25 (76.0%) free throw attempts. Conversely, the Bears were held to 18-of-66 (27.3%) shooting, 8-for-28 (28.6%) from three, despite fairing well at the charity stripe (11-for-14, 78.6%).
Dixon finished with a team-best 12 points for Brown, while Clarke and Lindsay Nickel had 11 points apiece. Jordin Juker and Sophie Beutel both registered a squad-leading six rebounds, while Clarke had four assists.
UMass will play its second straight at home this Sunday, Dec. 5, when the squad will play host to Boston College at 2 p.m.
