PHILADELPHIA - Lindsay Bowman scored off a pass from Katie Kelly 3:14 into overtime to break a scoreless tie and send top-seeded UMass field hockey (14-6) to the Atlantic 10 finals by defeating No. 4 seed Temple (9-12), 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Geasey Field. The Minutewomen will take on No. 2 seed Lock Haven in the finals on Saturday at 2 p.m. as they go for their 12th A-10 Championship and third in the last four years.
UMass completely controlled play throughout the game, outshooting the host Owls, 21-3, and drawing 12 penalty corners to Temple's three, but just as she did in their regular season meeting, a 1-0 UMass victory, Temple goalkeeper Sarah Dalrymple kept her team in the game, making 10 saves.
Just over three minutes into the overtime period, Kelly maneuvered by defenders and brought the ball into the left side of the circle where she sent a pass in front of the goal for Bowman, who knocked it in for the freshman's fourth goal.
Kelly recorded her eighth assist of the season on the play, giving the senior captain 20 for her career, tying her with Erin Parker (2005-08) and Julie McHugh (1976-79) for eight all-time at UMass.
Alesha Widdall made two saves for UMass, including a key stop in the closing minutes to earn the shutout victory. It is the junior's 20th career shutout and seventh this season. Widdall is now 3-1 with in A-10 Tournament games in her career. All three wins were by shutout and took place at Geasey Field.
Kelly led UMass with six shots, while Thando Zono added five as the UMass offense kept pressure on the Owls all game.
In the first half of play, UMass kept the ball in the Temple end for much of the half, but could not break the scoreless tie. The Minutewomen took an 11-1 shot advantage and an 8-2 edge in penalty corners into halftime.
UMass' finals match-up with Lock Haven is the program's 18 trip to the Atlantic 10 finals. The Minutewomen are 11-6 in A-10 finals games. Lock Haven, in its first season as an A-10 member, knocked off No. 3 seed Richmond, 4-2 in Friday's first semifinal.
