#23 Maryland Defeats UMass, 82-50

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The UMass women's basketball team made 9-of-22 from three-point range, but No. 23 Maryland controlled the inside game and defeated the Minutewomen, 82-50 on Saturday afternoon at the ECU Thanksgiving Tournament. UMass is now 0-5 to start the season, while the Terrapins improve to 5-1.
For a third straight game, senior Megan Zullo led UMass in scoring, totaling 14 points, aided by 4-for-6 shooting from three-point range. Senior Cerie Mosgrove followed with nine points and corralled four rebounds, while junior Emilie Teuscher registered eight points and grabbed two steals. Sophomore Shakia Robinson paced the Minutewomen with six rebounds and recorded six points, four assists and two steals, as well.
Sophomore Dee Montgomery's jumper 40 seconds into the game gave UMass the first points of the contest and its only lead of the afternoon. The Minutewomen were within five of the Terps with 13:27 remaining in the first half, 16-11, but Maryland went on a 15-2 run to break things open. With Alyssa Thomas and Tianna Hawkins in double figures and a 30-6 edge in points in the paint, the Terrapins took a 39-19 lead into the locker room at halftime.
UMass came out of the intermission by hitting four three pointers in the first 6:07 of the second half to come within 14 of Maryland at 46-32. However, the Terps responded with a 26-4 run to quell the rally by the Minutewomen. UMass' final basket in the contest marked a personal milestone for Mosgrove as she became just the seventh player in program history to record 100 career three-pointers.
The Minutewomen shot 8-for-21 (38.1%) in the second half, including 7-for-13 (53.8%) from beyond the arc to finish the day at 33.3% from the field (16-for-48), while making 9-of-18 (50%) at the free throw line. Maryland shot 54.1% overall (14-for-25), 2-for-9 (22.2%) from three and 14-for-25 (56%) at the free throw line. The Terps out-rebounded UMass, 47-25, led in points in the paint, 48-8 and second chance points, 22-7.
Alyssa Thomas paced four Maryland scorers in double figures with 15, Tianna Hawkins contributed 14 and Dandra Tchatchouang and Lynetta Kizer added 11 points apiece. Laura Mincy grabbed eight rebounds and handed out four assists, while Thomas and Hawkins each had seven boards and Dara Taylor tallied five assists.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 28, facing the tournament host, East Carolina at 1 p.m.
