AMHERST, Mass. - The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its 2010 Division I Senior All-Star Team on Tuesday with UMass midfielder Katie Kelly being one the 34 players from across the country to receive the honor. The two-year captain leads the Minutewomen with 11 goals and seven assists for 29 points.
The 2010 Division I Senior All-Star Game will be played on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the Univeristy of Maryland during Final Four weekend. The Senior Game participants will face off against the U.S. Women's National Team as well as against each other in a series of four 25-minute sessions.
Kelly, a 2009 NFHCA All-Northeast Region and Atlantic 10 All-Conference first-teamer, ranks in the top 10 all-time at UMass in career goals, assists, and points. The Dedham, Mass. native is sixth all-time in points with 91, tied for seventh in goals with Pam Moryl (1981-84) with 36, and tied for 10th in assists with Laura O'Neil (1977-80) with 19.
Kelly, who has notched five game-winning goals this season, is the fifth UMass player to be named a Senior All-Star in Justine Sowry's four years as head coach of the Minutewomen. She joins Cher King (2009), Katelyn Orlando (2008), Mary Shea (2008), and Erin O'Brien (2007).
Kelly leads the top-seeded Minutewomen into the Atlantic 10 Championship at Temple's Geasey Field on Friday where they will meet the host Owls in a 2 p.m. semifinal. The winner of that game and the winner of the 11 a.m. semifinal between Lock Haven and Richmond will meet in Saturday's 2 p.m. finals.
