UMass field hockey senior defender Makaela Potts was honored as one of the five 2010 Division I Regional Players of the Year as announced by NFHCA on Friday. Potts was named the top player in the Northeast Region, while Katie O'Donnell from Maryland, Melissa Gonzalez from Connecticut, Kelsey Kolojejchick from North Carolina, and Aisling Coyle from Ohio State were named Players of the Year in the other four regions.

After being honored as First-Team All-Region for the third straight year on Thursday, Potts is now receiving for the first time the Regional Play of Year honor in the Northeast.

The 2010 Longstreth/NFHCA All-American Teams will be selected from the five All-Region Teams and be announced on Monday, Nov. 22.

Potts, a 2008 and 2009 All-American, was once again the backbone of the UMass team in 2010, controlling the center of the field and directing the UMass attack from the backfield. The Sydney, Australia native was a key member on both the offensive and defensive corner units and finished the season with 16 points on six goals and four assists.

Potts was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season in 2010 while garnering First-Team All-Conference and A-10 All-Championship honors for the third year in a row.

Potts finished her career with 58 points on 20 goals and 18 assists in 85 starts in 89 career games.

The Minutewomen won their 12th Atlantic 10 Championship and made their 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010. The No. 18 Minutewomen earned an at-large bid to the NCAA field of 16 and fell at No. 1 Maryland, 4-2 on Nov. 13, finishing the season with a 15-8 record.
