AMHERST, Mass. - Field Hockey player Alesha Widdall and football player Tyler Holmes have been named UMass Co-Athletes of the Week. Both athletes will be honored at this Wednesday's UMass Sports Luncheon, to be held in the Cape Cod Room of the Student Union at 12:15pm.
Widdall led the Minutewomen to a 2-0 shutout win over No. 8 Syracuse. The junior goalkeeper saved a season high 11 shots. The win moves her into second-place among all active players nationally in career save percentage (.789), and she ranks sixth this season (.816).
The win over the Orange was the first since 1998, snapping a 12 game losing streak in the series.
In addition to being named UMass Co-Athlete of the Week, Widdall was also named A-10 Player of the Week.
Holmes, a junior linebacker and co-captain of UMass Football, has recently been added to the 2010 Buck Buchanon Award Watch List, sponsored by Fathead.com. The award is the top FCS individual honor for defensive players.
Holmes has been a force in the middle of the field for the Minutemen defense, posting 51 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles in five games. He had a season high 18 tackles against Towson last weekend.
He was also named FCS Linebacker of the Week by College Football Performance after the Towson game.
Widdall and the Minutewomen will be back in action on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. on Garber Field against A-10 foe Saint Louis.
Holmes and the Minutemen have a bye this week and will return to action on Oct. 16 when they host Richmond at 3:30 on Homecoming at McGuirk Stadium.
