Swimming And Diving Swept At BU

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept Saturday afternoon in their season opener against Boston University. The men lost 154 - 146, while the women fell 177 - 115.
Freshman Derek Hursch put together a fantastic day in his first collegiate meet. He was victorious in three events; 200-yard freestyle (1:44.89), 100-yard freestyle (47.36) and 200-yard IM (1:54.96). Joey Sbordon was another Minuteman to have a good day in the pool. He won the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, with times of 9:51.30 and 4:46.91, respectively. He also finished in second in the 500-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay with Chris Howard, Troy Nichols, and Eric Zeimetz.
In diving, Jason Cook continued his dominance as he won the three-meter (326.03) and the one-meter (298.80) dives. Adam Duffield claimed second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter.
For the Minutewomen Jessica Starosielec won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.99), and placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard IM and the 200 medley relay with Gillian Bank, Sarah Kanellas and Amina Meho. Kanellas was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly (59.07).
In the 200-yard IM the Minutewomen were able to sweep led by Ingrid Woelfel (2:12.72), followed closely by Kaitlyn McKenna, Starosielec and Meghan Nowak. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Anna Cavanaugh, Katie English, Tavis Potter and Meho took first with a time of 3:38.52.
Molly Elkins and Hannah Swift finished fourth and fifth respectively on both the one-meter and three-meter dives.
Both teams will be back in action on Oct. 23 at Joseph Rogers Pool in their home opener against Army.
