AMHERST, Mass. - UMass freshman Alexa Sikalis was named Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Rookie of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts in the Minutewomen's conference-opening 4-0 victory over Saint Louis on Saturday night. The forward from Acton, Mass. scored the first goal of the game, and her career, for what proved to be the game-winner.
Sikalis is the third UMass freshman already this season to win A-10 Rookie of the Week honors. Molly MacDonnell won the award last week for her goal in the 2-0 win over No. 8 Syracuse and Lindsay Bowman took the honor on Sept. 14 for her goals in wins over No. 4 UConn and Yale.
Sikalis led UMass to a 1-0 start in A-10 play by scoring off a pass from Katie Kelly just 1:32 into UMass' 4-0 win over Saint Louis at Garber Field. In her 10th start of the season, she also helped lead a UMass press that kept the ball in the Billikens' end of the field most of the game and led to a 28-0 UMass shot advantage, the first time it had held an opponent without a shot in over a decade.
The Minutewomen close non-conference play on Tuesday at Dartmouth, before returning home to host Lock Haven in A-10 action on Friday at 3 p.m.
