Cross Country Teams Compete At Paul Short

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The UMass cross country programs tested their luck on Friday as both the men and women traveled to Bethlehem, Pa for the annual and competitive Paul Short Invitational. The Minutemen placed 30th of 42 while the Minutewomen took 32nd in a field of 41. The two sides from UMass tallied a total of 1614 points with 800 going to the men and 814 for the women.
Finishing in a respectable 90th among a field of 387 competitors was senior Daniel Barry by crossing the line at 25:09. Following Barry's lead were Andrew Mulvaney and Scott VanderMolen as the teammates took 155th and 180th respectively in 25:31 and 25:44.
Rounding out the top five finishers for the Minutemen were the senior and freshman duo of Robert Deegan and Patrick McGowan as the former of the two placed 186th, with McGowan following in 189th.
On the women's side Karen Roa led the way for UMass in a field of 367 competitors, as the junior took 79th overall in 21:56. Following Roa was Elizabeth Fisk and the top finisher at the Home Meet (9/18), Courtney Baldwin. The teammates crossed the line at 22:41 and 22:49, placing 151st and 167th respectively.
Completing the field of scorers for the Mintuewomen were Gina Perno and Claire Pettit in 189th and 228th respectively. The two harriers recorded marks of 23:02 and 23:30.
The Minutemen and Minutewomen will be back in action next weekend at the New England Championships. The start time for both is set promptly for 12 pm in Boston, Mass.
