UMass Baseball Represented In Professional Ranks

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Baseball has gradated several players into the professional ranks in past years. This season, the Minutemen were represented by five players who made appearances in minor league ball as well as at the major league level. Most recently, Mitchell Clegg appeared in 13 games for the Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York-Penn League. In addition to Clegg, Matt Torra, Ron Villone, Chad Paronto and Nick Gorneault each played in various minor league systems while Paronto was called up to the Houston Astros last week.

Appeared in 13 games with a 2-4 record and a 2.20 earned run average and 30 strikeouts

    Named Southern League pitcher of the week twice, and was named to the Southern League All-Star team in 2009.

    Appeared in 56 games for the Nationals with a 4.22 earned run average in 42.2 innings. Also had 28 strikeouts.

    Appeared in 44 games for the Round Rock express of the Pacific Coast League before being assigned to the Astros last week. Had a 1.39 earned run average in 51.2 innings prior to call-up.

    Played in 188 games in 2009, finishing with a .210 average with 10 home runs and 56 RBI.
