BURLINGTON, Vt. - After going down a goal early in the first half, Mark DeSantis scored the equalizing goal in the 40th minute giving UMass a 1-1 double overtime draw with Vermont on Sunday. Shane Curran-Hays earned the start in goal for the Minutemen making five saves. UMass will return to action on Saturday night at Northeastern.
Vermont's (0-3-2) D.J. Edler scored the game's first goal in the sixth minute of play when he took a low cross from Marty Galvin. Galvin had carried the ball down the right flank before slipping the pass to Edler.
UMass (0-1-3) fought back to tie the game at the 39:57 mark of the first half. DeSantis headed home a free position kick from preseason All-American Ben Arikian who had assisted or scored eight of the Minutemen's 10 game-winning goals last season.
From that point forward, both defenses settled in allowing no other scores on the day. Curran-Hays made five saves for UMass including two in the second overtime period. Tom Critz stopped four shots for the Catamounts.
The Minutemen tallied 10 shots in the game, seven in the first half, while Vermont fired 15 shots including three in the second overtime. Corner kicks were a decisive advantage for UMass which earned eight to just four for Vermont. The Catamounts were also called offsides six times in the game.
The draw gives UMass three for the season the most since the Minutemen opened the 1983 season with a 0-1-3 record as well.
