AMHERST, Mass. - Four members of the UMass baseball team have been selected to play in the 16th annual Oldtime Baseball Game in Cambridge, Mass., on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m., it was announced recently. Minutemen pitchers Mike DiCato, Nick Serino and Isaac Oakley and infielder Matt Gedman will take part in the event, which raises money for charity.
The Oldtime Baseball Game is a celebration of the national pastime, played each year at St. Peter's Field on Sherman Street in North Cambridge. The game, which began in 1994, offers a glimpse into the past when hundreds of fans would turn out to root for their "town" team in various local semipro leagues. Players are chosen from colleges and universities from the Boston area, with an occasional high school player or retired big-leaguer added to the mix, and each wear flannel uniforms that represent a collection of teams, spanning virtually every era in baseball history.
DiCato, Serino and Oakley will play for the Road Team, managed by Lennie Merullo, who enjoyed a seven-year MLB career with the Chicago Cubs in the 1940s.
Gedman will be a part of the Home Team, managed by Johnny Pesky, who has been a part of the Red Sox organization for more than 60 years as player, coach, manager, broadcaster and goodwill ambassador.
Serino and Gedman recently finished up their summer league season with the Lowell All-Americans of the NECBL. Gedman started 18 games and tallied 11 hits, three doubles, five runs scored, six RBI and five walks after joining the squad midway through its schedule.
Among the league leaders with 60 strikeouts, Serino earned a trip to the NECBL All-Star Game and posted a 2-3 record on the mound with a 2.96 ERA in 54.2 innings of work for the All-Americans.
