AMHERST, Mass. - After a stellar start to his professional career, UMass baseball's Mitchell Clegg has been selected to play in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, it was announced on Wednesday. Clegg will represent the Vermont Lake Monsters as a member of the National League squad in State College, Pa., on Aug. 18, on the campus of Penn State University.

The 6-5 lefty, who was drafted by the Washington Nationals as the first pick of the 21st round (622nd overall) this June, began the season as a reliever for the Lake Monsters, but quickly earned a spot in the squad's starting rotation. To date, Clegg holds a 1-2 record and has appeared nine games with seven starts for a total of 38.0 innings. He boasts a 1.89 ERA with seven walks and 22 strikeouts.

Clegg is the latest in a group of current and former Minutemen to earn all-star nods this summer. Matt Torra (Arizona Diamondbacks) was the starting pitcher for the South in the double-A Southern League All-star game last month, while returning lefty hurlers Nick Serino and Mike Gedman played in all-star games for their respective summer leagues.

For the bulk of UMass' 2009 season, Clegg served as the No. 1 starter in the Minutemen's rotation. In his senior campaign, Clegg posted a 7-1 record with 4.15 ERA in 91.0 innings pitched with 35 walks and a team-leading 81 strikeouts, limiting opposing hitters to a .251 average. He was named to the All-New England second team and participated in the NEIBA All-Star Game.

A two-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, Clegg pitched a complete game shutout on Apr. 17, a 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's for head coach Mike Stone's 600th career win. Then on May 1, Clegg struck out a career-high 12 batters vs. St. Bonaventure. His .875 winning percentage is tied for seventh on the UMass single season top-10 list while his 13 games started is tied for third and his innings pitched ranks tied for fourth.

After transferring from Maine as a junior, Clegg played two seasons with the Minutemen and compiled an 11-6 record on the mound with a 4.33 ERA in 162.0 innings pitched. He totaled 123 strikeouts to 64 walks, while opponents hit just .257 against him in his UMass career.
