AMHERST, Mass. - All 12 UMass baseball players taking part in summer league action saw time on the diamond last week. Mike Gedman represented the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers in the Northwoods League All-Star Game and Minuteman-to-be Cameron McMullen is doing his part to help the North Adams Steeplecats drive towards the post season with three multi-hit games and six RBI last week. Here is an update on UMass' summer league competitors from the week of July 20-26.
Charlie Benson (Danbury, NECBL, 1-3 Last Week) - Pitched two innings of relief and took the loss in 4-2 setback at Holyoke (7/25) ... Allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Tom Conley (New Bedford, NECBL, 2-4 Last Week) - Played in all six games last week, starting five, including four behind the plate ... Hit 1-for-4 in a 3-1 win at North Shore (7/20) ... Went 2-for-4 with a double in a 2-1 loss to North Shore (7/26) ... Batted 1-for-4 in 13-7 loss to Sanford (7/26).
Mike Donato (Manchester, NECBL, 2-4 Last Week) - Started four of six games in right field ... Has a sacrifice in a 3-2 loss at Newport (7/22) ... Hit 1-for-5 with a run scored in a 6-4 win at New Bedford (7/24) ... Went 2-for-4 with a double, and RBI and two runs scored in 6-2 win against Newport (7/25).
Jared Freni (North Shore, NECBL, 2-3 Last Week) - Made a relief appearance in a 9-3 loss at Newport (7/24) ... Threw 1.2 innings and surrendered one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Matt Gedman (Lowell, NECBL, 2-5 Last Week) - Started at shortstop in five of seven games ... Batted 1-for-4 in 9-5 loss to Newport (7/20) ... Drew a walk in 5-2 loss to North Shore (7/22) ... Was 1-for-4 with a run scored in a 15-2 loss to Sanford (7/25) ... Went 1-for-3 with a run scored and was hit by a pitch in an 8-5 win at Manchester (7/26).
Mike Gedman (Brainerd Lakes Area, Northwoods, 1-3 Last Week) - Started in all four games ... Batted 2-for-4 in 9-2 loss to St. Cloud (7/23) ... Went 1-for-5 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in a 9-8 loss at St. Cloud (7/24) ... Started on the mound and took the loss in a 6-1 setback to Mankato (7/26) ... Allowed four runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts in 4.0 innings on the mound.
Bryan Leigh (Lowell, NECBL, 2-5 Last Week) - Pitched one-third of an inning in 5-2 loss to North Shore (7/22), coming out of the bullpen ... Retired both batters he faced, striking out one ... Made a start and got the win in a 5-2 victory over Manchester (7/26) ... Worked 5.2 innings and limited the Silkworks to one run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
Cameron McMullen (North Adams, NECBL, 3-2 Last Week) - Went 2-for-4 with an RBI in a 7-1 loss to Keene (7/24) ... Started at second base and hit 2-for-4 with three RBI, helping squad to 5-4 win vs. Vermont (7/25) ... Started at second and was 2-for-6 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in 15-2 win at Pittsfield (7/26).
Glen Misho (North Shore, NECBL, 2-3 Last Week) - Threw 6.1 innings of relief in 8-3 loss to Keene (7/26) ... Gave up just one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Kyle Multner (North Shore, NECBL, 2-3 Last Week) - Started in center field and went 1-for-3 in a 5-2 win at Lowell (7/22) ... Also appeared in 2-1 win at New Bedford (7/25)
Nick Serino (Lowell, NECBL, 2-5 Last Week) - Had a quality start, but did not earn a decision in a 5-2 loss to North Shore (7/22) ... Pitched 7.2 innings and allowed one run on six hits with three walks and 10 strikeouts ... Worked an inning of relief and picked up a save in a 2-1 win over Manchester (7/26) ... Retired all three batters he faced, striking out one.
Corey Volpicelli (Lowell, NECBL, 2-5 Last Week) - After recently joining the All-Americans, started two games last week at catcher ... Batted 1-for-4 with an RBI in a 15-3 loss to Sanford (7/25) ... Had a sacrifice fly RBI in a 2-1 win vs. Manchester (7/26), bringing in what would be the deciding run.
