UMass Baseball Summer Leagues Update #2

AMHERST, Mass. - Out off the 12 members of the UMass baseball squad that are currently honing their skills on the diamond in summer league action, 10 players saw time on the field last week. Several Minutemen, posted strong performances for the Lowell All-Americans of the NECBL, including Bryan Leigh and Matt Gedman, while teammate Nick Serino capped off the week by tossing a scoreless inning in the NECBL All-Star Game in Holyoke on Saturday. Here is an update on UMass' summer league competitors from the week of July 13-19.

Tom Conley (New Bedford, NECBL, 2-1 Last Week) - Started all three games, including two behind the plate ... Drew a walk in a 5-2 loss vs. Keene (7/13) ... Went 3-for-5 in 7-6 extra inning win at Lowell (7/15), including two hits off fellow Minuteman Nick Serino ... Was the designated hitter in 5-2 win at Holyoke (7/17).

Mike Donato (Manchester, NECBL, 1-4 Last Week) - Played in four games, starting two ... Drew a walk in pinch hit appearance in 2-1 loss to North Adams (7/14) ... Started, scored two runs and drew a walk in a 6-5 win over North Shore (7/16), including scoring what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth inning ... Started and went 2-for-4 with a triple in 2-1 loss to Newport (7/17).

Jared Freni (North Shore, NECBL, 1-4 Last Week) - Was the losing pitcher in 14-6 setback at Lowell (7/14) ... Pitched 2.2 innings and gave up seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits and walked one.

Matt Gedman (Lowell, NECBL, 4-3 Last Week) - Played in five games ... Started on the mound and took the loss in a 4-1 setback vs. North Adams (4/13), working three innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with eight walks and five strikeouts ... Went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk two RBI and two runs scored in 14-6 win over North Shore (7/14) ... Had a double and an RBI in 7-6 loss to New Bedford (7/15) ... Drew a walk in 7-1 win vs. Holyoke (7/16).

Mike Gedman (Brainerd Lakes Area, Northwoods, 3-4 Last Week) - Played in six games ... Started at first and drove in a run in a 10-1 loss at Rochester (7/15) ... Went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI in 12-4 win at Rochester (7/15) ... Started on the mound at Mankato (7/18) and took the loss, allowing five runs, one earned, on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work in the 7-4 setback ... Hit 2-for-5 with two runs scored in 4-2 win at Mankato (7/19) ... His eighth inning single helped carry the squad to victory.

Bryan Leigh (Lowell, NECBL, 4-3 Last Week) - Started on the mound and picked up the win in a 7-1 victory at Holyoke (7/16) ... Worked six innings and allowed just one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Cameron McMullen (North Adams, NECBL, 3-2 Last Week) - Started in four games ... Drew a walk in 4-1 win over Lowell (7/13) ... Went 2-for-4 with two RBI in 5-4 loss to Holyoke (7/15) ... Also started vs. Manchester (7/14) and at Sanford (7/17).

Glen Misho (North Shore, NECBL, 1-4 Last Week) - Did not allow a run in one inning of work in 6-5 loss at Manchester (7/15) ... Gave up one hit and struck out one of the four batters he faced.

Kyle Multner (North Shore, NECBL, 1-4 Last Week) - Played in three games, starting two ... Walked three times and scored two runs in 14-6 loss at Lowell (7/14) ... Drew a walk in 3-2 loss at Danbury (7/15).

Nick Serino (Lowell, NECBL, 4-3 Last Week) - Had another strong performance on the mound, but did not get a decision in his start in a 7-6 10-inning loss to New Bedford (7/15) ... Struck out 10 batters and scattered three runs on eight hits, walking three ... Also pitched an inning in the NECBL All-Star Game in Holyoke, striking out two of the three batters he face and not allowing a hit.
