Minutewomen Topped By A10 Third Seeded Xavier, 4-0

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team dropped to Xavier in a Friday night match, 4-0. After a successful morning victory over Dayton, the sixth seeded Minutewomen (10-14) fell out of the Atlantic-10 Championships main draw to the third seeded, Xavier Musketeers. The Musketeers won two of the three doubles matches and three of the singles matches to secure the 4-0 win. The Minutewomen were two points away from a win at No. 1 doubles and were in the middle of three very competitive singles matches when play was suspended.
At No. 1 doubles, freshman Magdalena Ploch and partner Tanisha Hodgson were winning 7-6, with deuce in the 14th game when play was suspended. At No. 2 doubles Maude Lecluyse and Laura Danai fell to Xavier players Courtney and Feider, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles Candynce Boney and Kaitlyn Carpenter lost to the duo of Ducro and Seyalioglu in a very tight 8-6 match.
In singles action, at No. 1, Xaviers Kara Courtney defeated Ploch, 6-1, 6-4 earning Xavier its second point. The Musketeers remaining two points came at Nos. 5 and 6 singles with Zinn and Feider scoring 7-5, 7-5 and 7-5, 7-6(1), respectively. With the match decided singles play at Nos. 2-4 were stopped mid-play, with UMass ahead at No. 2 in a third set.
Friday morning, UMass started out the A 10 Championships by taking out eleventh seeded Dayton, 5-0. UMass came out strong in the Dayton match winning Nos. 1 and 2 doubles and 1-4 singles. When play was halted, at 5-0, UMass was within games of winning the remaining matches.
At No. 1 singles Ploch swept over her opponent 6-0, 6-3. At No. 3 singles, her doubles partner Hodgson, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win. At No. 2 and 4 singles Boney and Carpenter also say singles success, dropping only 5 games between the two.
The Minutewomen continue their Atlantic 10 Championship play on Saturday afternoon when they take on seventh seed Duquesne in the consolation bracket at 3:30 p.m. EST.
Massachusetts head coach Judy Dixon is looking for her 200th win going into Saturday's afternoon match.
