AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass baseball team used five home runs to help power its way past Boston College, 12-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. With the victory, the Minutemen move to 11-19 overall, while the Eagles drop to 23-13. The win also was the 599th for UMass head coach Mike Stone as his next will be the 600th of his 27-year coaching career.
Boston College began the game with a two-run top of the first. Andrew Lawrence poked a one-out single up the middle and Tony Sanchez followed with a walk. On the next play, both runners came home as Mickey Wiswall singled and moved to second as the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
The Minutemen quickly erased the deficit with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the inning. Senior Sam Boone dropped a single into right center and his classmate Adam Tempesta blasted the first pitch he saw over the fence in left for a two-run homer.
In the top of the second, the Eagles continued the back-and-forth scoring as Mike Sudol led off with a single through the right side and came in on an RBI single by Robbie Anston. Brad Zapenas reached on an error and added the team's fourth run, scoring on a double down the right field line by Lawrence.
UMass took one of the runs back in the bottom of the second as junior Mike Gedman rocketed a solo home run to right, his first of his career. The Minutemen then climbed on top with a four-run fourth inning. Sophomore Matt Gedman snuck a single through the right side of the infield and the next batter, sophomore Kyle Multner, drove a two-run shot over the trees in left center. Boone followed with a solo home run to left. Then with two away in the frame, junior Brian Baudinet singled and advanced to second on an error before senior Jim Macdonald plated him with an RBI double.
Boston College pulled to within a run of the Minutemen in the top of the fifth. Wiswall reached on an error and came home on a sacrifice fly by Sudol, while Barry Butera walked and scored on an error, bringing the score to 7-6.
That would be as close as the Eagles would come, however, as UMass tacked on three more runs in its next turn at bat. Freshman Tom Conley started things off for the Minutemen with a one-out single up the middle. Back-to-back four-pitch walks to Matt Gedman and Multner loaded the bases for Boone who sent a two-RBI single into shallow center. Tempesta followed and brought home Multner with a sacrifice fly to extend UMass' lead to 10-6.
B.C. scored twice with two out in the sixth. Sanchez doubled to left, Wiswall drew a walk and Butera drove in both runners with a double to the base of the fence in left center.
Mike Gedman took the mound in the seventh and held the Eagles off the board for the remaining three innings, allowing only one hit with one walk and two strikeouts to log his fifth save of the season. He also used his bat to provide UMass with two more insurance runs as he knocked in junior Mike Donato with an RBI single to center in the sixth before belting his second home run of the game with two down in the eighth.
Senior Mike DiCato earned the victory (3-2) for the Minutemen as he allowed eight runs, four earned, on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings on the hill. Matt O'Brien was hooked with the loss (1-1) for Boston College. He surrendered four runs on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief work
In a balanced offensive effort for UMass, all 10 members of the batting order had at least one hit, paced by Boone and Mike Gedman, who finished the day 3-for-4 and 3-for-5, respectively, each with two runs scored and three RBI. Matt Gedman and Multner both scored twice, while Multner and Tempesta contributed two RBI apiece.
Wiswall and Lawrence both had multiple-hit outings for the Eagles as Lawrence finished 2-for-3 and Wiswall went 2-for-4.
UMass continues its homestand with a three-game series against Saint Joseph's this Fri.-Sun., Apr. 17-19. The opener against the Hawks is slated for Friday at 3 p.m. on Earl Lorden Field.
