AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's track & field team ranked first of 11 teams in the squad's first home track meet of the season on Saturday. The Minutemen finished with 186 points, defeating the second-place finisher, Central Connecticut State University, by 73 points.

The Minutemen dominated the 10,000 meter run earning the top four spots and five of the top six. Junior Andrew Mulvaney (South Hadley, Mass.) earned the gold in the first event of the day, posting a time of 30:39.12. Brothers David and Kevin Johnson (Ludlow, Mass.) took second and third, respectively. David finished in 30:40.35 while Kevin crossed in 30:45.63. Sophomore Zach Gordon (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished fourth with a time of 31:11.57 and junior Jason Ayr (Westfield, Mass.) ranked sixth with a time of 32:11.97.

In the steeplechase, junior Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) grabbed the gold with a time of 9:16.08, amassing ten points for the Minutemen. Junior Sonny Gamble (Marlborough, Mass.) ranked third with a time of 9:31.28. In the 5000, junior Jonathan Pierce posted a time of 14:43.18, good enough for a second place finish, while senior Kevin Quadrozzi ranked seventh in that event with a time of 15:04.32.

In the field, throwing the javelin 183-00 was sophomore Chris Vercollone for a first place finish. Freshman Zach Koncki (Northampton, Mass.) ranked second in the long jump with a distance of 21-07.50. Rookie Daniel Wu (Tenafly, N.J.) finished fourth with a long jump of 21-03.25. Sophomore Sean Busch also ranked first overall in the pole vault with a height of 15-03.00. Daniel Schwartz grabbed fourth in that event (12-03.50), while Chris Dzidek finished just behind in third with the same mark. Sophomore Kevin Spieler finished first overall in the discus with a throw of 142-10. Freshman David McKenna ranked just behind him in that event with a mark of 135-04. Koncki took eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 40-02.25.

In the short distance, Koncki ranked first on the track in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.87. Dzidek ranked fifth in that event with a time of 16.79. Freshman Philip Weltman (Dedham, Mass.) took silver with a time of 23.12 in the 200 meter dash. Arjun Collins also finished eighth with a time of 11.73 in the 100 meter dash.

Running mid-distance, Ryan DiOrio (Bridgewater, N.J.) took the silver in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.48. Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N.Y.) placed sixth in that event, posting a time of 1:57.26. Freshman Michael McDonough crossed second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.56. Junior Jason Dwyer (Westwood, Mass.) ranked fourth in that event with a time of 57.29. Senior Pete Fortunato (Tewksbury, Mass.) crossed the finish line in 4:02.26 for a fifth place finish in the 1500 meter run. Andrew O'Donnell, a junior from Plymouth, Mass., finished eighth in the 400 meter run with a time of 50.99.
