Boston, Mass. - The UMass men's track and field team competed on day one of the IC4A Championships this Saturday to no team score. The top performance of the day came from sophomore Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N.Y.) who ran a season best 2:26.83 in the 1000 meter run for the fifth best time in UMass indoor track history. VanderMolen ranked eleventh overall. Also posting a solid time, freshman Philip Weltman (Dedham, Mass.) who ran the 400 meter event in 48.89 for a 16th place finish.

The distance medley relay consisting of Zach Gordon, Daniel Schwartz, Ryan DiOrio and Andrew McCann also ran a solid time of 10:06.44 for a 19th place finish. Also for the relays, the 4X400 squad of Matt Gulino, Andrew O'Donnell, Daniel Schwartz, and Jason Dwyer ranked 21st with a time of 3:21.18. Alex Tarlow, Mark Mariano, Josh Boone, and Pete Fortunato ran the 4X800 meter relay for a 23rd place finish with a time of 7:58.98.

In the short distance, sophomore Darius Velez (Cambridge, Mass.) ran the 55 meter dash in 6.55 for a 23rd place finish. Junior Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) finished the 55 meter hurdles in 7.78 for a 22nd place finish.

For the long-distance events, the highest ranking came from junior Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) who finished 19th in the 3000 meter with a time of 8:29.69. Junior Sean Duncan (Gardner, Mass.) ranked 27th in the 800 meter with a time of 1:57.33. Senior Pete Fortunato (Tewksbury, Mass.) ran the mile in 4:22.40 for a 31st place ranking.
