UMass Women's Rowing Wins Yankee Cup

AMHERST, Mass. -

The UMass women's rowing team reclaimed the Yankee Cup on Saturday in Kingston, R.I at the URI Campanella Rowing Center, competing against URI, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. The team last won it in 2006. Although both the Varsity 8+ and the JV8+ lost to URI, the first novice eight, the novice 4+, the light weight 4+, varsity A 4+, varsity B 4+ and the quad all won their races by significant margins.

URI overstroked both Varsity 8+ and JV8+ UMass boats with respective times of 6:46.7 and 6:58.0 and gained their margin of a boat length by the halfway point. Both UMass boats held URI to one boat length through the end of the race. With strong performances from the team, UMass was able to win the points trophy and reclaim the Yankee Cup, which had been won by URI the past two seasons.
