No. 1 Boston University Skates Past UMass Hockey, 7-2

BOSTON - Nick Bonino scored two goals and added an assist in No. 1 Boston University's 7-2 win over UMass Hockey Saturday night at Agganis Arena. The Mintuemen jumped out to an early 1-0 on James Marcou's 12th goal of the season, but the Terriers scored seven straight goals, including three power play tallies. Cory Quirk netted his 10th goal of the season late in the third period. Dan Meyers got the start in goal for the Minutemen, making 21 saves. Paul Dainton also saw time for UMass, making two saves while Kieran Millan made 28 saves in goal for the Terriers. The Minutemen (14-17-3, 9-13-3 HEA) will be back in action next weekend for a home-and-home series with Merrimack. UMass will travel to North Andover, Mass. for Friday's game before hosting the Warriors on Saturday for Senior Night. Both games are slated for 7 PM.
Shots were 30-to-30 for the game, while the Terriers (25-5-4, 16-5-4 HEA) went 3-for-8 on the power play. The Minutemen were 1-for-6 on the man-advantage.
The Minutemen outshot Boston University 13-5 during the first period, and took an early 1-0 on Marcou's 12th goal of the season. The Terriers responded with a goal of their own when Corey Trivino notched his third goal of the season.
7:39 into the stanza, Marcou intercepted a Terrier clearing attempt at the point. Marcou then skated into the slot and let a slapshot go that beat Millan over the right shoulder. Just 26 seconds later, Boston University made it a 1-1 game when Vinny Saponari took a pass in tight from Chris Connolly. Saponari then threaded a backhand pass to Trivino who tapped the puck in before Meyers could cut across to make the save.
The Terriers took control in the second period, scoring three power play goals and outshooting the Minutemen 15-5. UMass took seven penalties throughout the frame, enabling Boston University to maintain puck possession for a majority of the period. The Terriers took a 2-1 lead six minutes into the stanza when Nick Bonino netted his 12th goal of the season. Brandon Yip controlled the puck at the point, and then fired a hard pass cross-ice to Bonino. Bonino held the puck for a moment and then wristed the puck top shelf for the score.
Boston University took a two-goal lead near the midway mark of the period when Colby Cohen notched his fourth goal of the year. Colin Wilson held the puck at the bottom of the right faceoff dot, and then sent a cross-ice pass to Cohen at the point. Cohen let a rocket go that rang off the post and in. Paul Dainton replaced Meyers following the goal.
The Terriers took a commanding lead with six minutes remaining in the period on Jason Lawrence's 20th goal of the season. After receiving a pass from Kevin Shattenkirk, Cohen took a low shot from the point that Lawrence redirected past Dainton for the score.
Boston University piled it on in the third period, adding three more goals after Meyers was inserted back into the game. The first came 36 seconds into the frame on Yip's 13th goal of the season. Off the faceoff, Bonino won the puck back to Yip who fired a quick shot that beat Meyers for the score.
Three minutes later Bonino scored his second of the night when he skated into the UMass zone, took the puck around the net and wrapped it into the net before Meyers could go post-to-post. The Terriers made it 7-1 with 12 minutes to play in regulation when Connolly redirected a Shattenkirk shot from the point for his ninth goal of the season.
Quirk closed out the scoring with 2:35 to play in the period when he came out of a battle with the puck and wristed the puck over Millan's shoulder for the score.
