Minutemen Finish Seventh At Atlantic 10 Championships

Kingston, R.I. - The UMass men's track and field team ranked seventh of 10 teams at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Kingston, R.I. this weekend. The best performances of the day came from freshman Philip Weltman (Dedham, Mass.) and sophomore Daniel Schwartz (Sudbury, Mass.) Both Weltman and Schwartz ranked third. Weltman finished the 400 meter run in 50.08, while Schwartz scored 4334 points in the heptathlon to amass six for the Minutemen. Schwartz finished first in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:43.13 and third in the shot put (33-02.50) and pole vault (12-03.50).
In the field events, freshmen Daniel Wu (Tenafly, N.J.) and Zach Koncki (Northampton, Mass.) placed fifth and seventh respectively in the triple jump. Wu marked a distance of 45-01.00, beating the previous team best by just under four feet. Koncki jumped a distance of 44-09.50.
In the 800 meter, junior Ryan DiOrio (Bridgewater, N.J.) crossed the finish line in 1:56.95 for a fourth place finish while sophomore Sean Duncan (Stow, Mass.) finished just behind with a time of 1:57.86. In the mile, sophomore Zachary Gordon (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished fifth (4:20.28) while senior Josh Boone (Gardner, Mass.) placed eighth (4:21.77).
In the short events, sophomore Darius Velez (Cambridge, Mass.) ran the 55 meter in 6.51 for a fifth place finish. Junior Tyler Cotto ranked seveth with a time of 7.82 in the 55 meter hurdles.
The Minutemen will return to action next weekend, Feb. 27-28 for the New England Championships.
