AMHERST, Mass. - UMass' Ben Arikian and Andrew Henshaw were named to National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Region Teams as announced by the organization. Arikian was picked for the Mid-Atlantic First Team, while Henshaw was named to the Mid-Atlantic Third Team. Arikian, a junior, earned his second nod to the Mid-Atlantic First Team after leading the Minutemen in scoring.
A native of West Islip, N.Y., Arikian led the Minutemen in points on three goals and four assists during the 2009 season. The midfielder factored into seven of UMass' 15 goals this season, and also set up two game-winning tallies in 2009. He was on the preseason watch list for the Hermann Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation's best soccer player. Arikian also earned Mid-Atlantic First Team honors in 2008 after being named the Atlantic 10 Midfielder of the Year.
As a sophomore, Henshaw was the leader of the UMass defense this season. The Minutemen ranked first in the conference and was among the top-ten in the nation, allowing just 0.82 goals per game. Henshaw also netted two goals during the 2009 season, both of which came in Atlantic 10 play. He notched the game-winning goal on October 9 at Xavier.
UMass finished the 2009 season with a 7-7-3 record, and narrowly missed the postseason tournament. The Minutemen will return nearly all team members for the 2010 season.
