AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass rowing team will travel to Hanover, N.H. on Saturday to compete in the Dartmouth Head. While the varsity team will not make the trip this weekend, the novices will be representing the Minutewomen on the Connecticut River. Massachusetts will conclude its fall season next weekend at the Foot of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
The format for the race is two even eights, with the winner determined by adding the two boats' time together and then compared to the competition. Massachusetts will be racing eights from MIT, Radcliffe, MIT Lightweights, Dartmouth, and Vermont.
While UMass has entered just two eights in this weekend's races, UMass has had substantial success to this point in the fall season. Starting at the Head of the Housatonic in early October, Julia Richter finished third in the single's race with a time of 20:33.983 while Samantha Smith placed fifth (22:09.628). The two UMass boats entered in the women's pair came in first and second, with Amanda Doolin and Alexandra DiMatteo (20:12.495) and Teresa O'Brien and Katherine Kern (20:21.425).
The Minutewomen continued to build momentum at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, with both the Varsity and Lightweight 8+ racing on the Charles River. At the Head of the Fish, the Minutewomen took the top four spots in the singles race, led by Richter's first place finish (14:32.73). As a team, Massachusetts had five first place finishers in Saratoga, N.Y.
